  • Get a room!

We did. It doesn't take me very long

  • The knee warmers will stop that sticky clammy feeling you get when damo's legs are hooked over your shoulders.

  • that's what the talc is for

  • I wear the hankie in my left pocket thank you.

  • Sorry to dredge this thread, but I am looking to buy a jacket for use this summer whilst riding Land's End to John O'G. I currently own a Rapha stowaway which has generally been fine.

However, I am slightly concerned that if I wake up and it is going to piss down all day then it is going to be a very soggy day of riding. Having re read the thread, I acknowledge the 'nothing is properly waterproof / breathable for that long anyway' sentiment. But, to have a lightweight and well vented jacket to take the brunt of the weather can be no bad thing. If I manage to time the trip to coincide with a wet spell then the fun factor will be fairly low.

Generally recomendations seem to revolve around:
    Showers Pass Elite 2.0
    Showers pass Elite Pro
    Endura Event
    Montaine featherlight
    Mavic Infinity

My gut instinct is to stfu and buy one. Get wet, sulk on bike, reach J O'G and promise self not to repeat in a hurry.

Is anyone able to offer any further suggestions?
Any particular opinions on any of these as being a good summer weight waterproof?

  • Your stowaway is as good as any you have listed.

The Rapha rain jacket offers more protection but you will sweat more inside anyway.

  • But if you have a stowaway, you don't need it.

  • Not really one for a heavy rainstorm, but I've been using a Sugoi Versa for the past week, it rocks. Removable sleeves are held on by magnets = almost instant gillet conversion. Has a pocket for the sleeves also.

Gotta find more uses for the magnetic sleeves tho...

  • how work they do?

  • more magnets in gillet part. according to the reviews this makes it noticeably heavier. I haven't noticed.

  • If you're worried about getting very wet then just buy a paclite goretex jacket with vents --- or e-vent.

  • Or a poncho + mudguard.

then you'll be nearly 100% dry.

  • Endura Stealth is gash

  • I'm gonna bring this thread back from the dead now. The weather is changing (well it's getting worse) and I have up to £100 to spend on a new jacket. I quite like the style of the PI Stockton and the Surface Aquaphobic, but would like some more options if anyone has any reccomendations and links that'd be great.

  • up to £100! ;)

I've heard it's great, just want to get some more options within budget ideally.

  • If I were you I'd up the budget by £20.

Last time I was looking, being firmly in the +£100 camp buys you a proper gore-tex jacket. Where as being in the sub-£100 gets you something you'll later wish you hadn't spent the £80-100 on.

FWIW I have one of these...

.... because I wanted something really light and breathable without spending the money goretex. Now I wish I'd have spent the extra.

I also have a rapha fixie jacket thing (the old version of this before they changed the name to something less retarded), that I wear much, much more...and strangely enough makes me sweat less.

Also I'd draw up a list of your criteria. It's been a while since I read it but someone said it - there's no such thing as an "Ultimate" riding jacket. It's always a balance.

yes I have that jacket and it has served me very well, I love it for riding in and it's not sweaty I agree - I bought it BNWT off the Bay at roughly half price - would never have considered it full price though, but knowing what I know now, I would buy again full price

  • Can't tell what technology the Rapha uses, but I prefer http://www.eventfabrics.com/ to Gore Tex. Over the years I've had three different Gore jackets de-laminate on me and they never performed that well in even mildly sweaty situations. Not sure what's available over there that uses eVent, but in my opinion it'd be worth checking out.

  • Thanks for the feedback so far. I found a review about the Chrome Anza jacket earlier, but wondered if anyone here has tried it and/or reccommends it.

It's within budget, it looks pretty smart...

  • I might be talking out of my arse here, but;

    ...Water repellent 100% Polyester...

does not sound like something I'd want to wear cycling.

I'd always rather have something breathable and comfortable so I don't end up soaked in sweat. But then I usually ride sub 30mins stopping and starting in the city, or long rides/exercise expecting to sweat and get wet.

    • how long do you usually ride for
    • where do you usually ride
    • what is the weather you will most likely ride in; and how long is this likely to be for?
  • damn I love my Rab Exodus. Such a great softshell for cold autumn commuting. It is for alpine climbing so it has space for a helmet, the fabric is kinda stretchy, long arms and thight fit = great for cycling too. Great balance between breathability and waterproofness. And pretty cheap too, paid 160e.

Picked one of these up, Event hood, shoulders and tail, also had them in Black/Grey, not showing much stock options on line, but may have more stock in stores? i picked mine up from the Manchester Rock Bottom outlet store.

Seems decent, stretchy where you want it and waterproof where you want it, a bit of a win for £90....

  • Nah - I can't hack a hood on a cycle jacket. Gathers at the back of the neck.....
I am a massive fan of Rab though.
