From that first link..
"This version has been adapted for online use from the Department for Transport's current printed version of the Highway Code. In any proceedings, whether civil or criminal, only the Department for Transport's current printed version of the Code should be relied upon"which means if you want THE LAW.. you need to go and find a printed copy.

No vehicle has a particularly good view of a cyclist overtaking/undertaking within close proximity of the body through its mirrors so probably best not to do it from a safety rather than legal perspective.
And please sleep well without any nightmares.

I don't exactly have nightmares about it... but i get get pretty fucked-off when cyclists ride up the inside.
If I'm 1m from the curb that's because that's how much space I want to ride into when an oncoming taxi swerves at me/van pulls out etc... i'm not saving it for another cyclist so we can have a fucking chat!

Yeah this annoys me as well. i have to look over my right shoulder for advancing cyclists more than I have to look over my left shoulder for advancing traffic.
edit: other way round. left-right knowledge fail. ;(

Totally agree. The last thing I want to think about at a junction is what the other tosser who's been all over every side of the road trying to get to the front of the queue is going to do when the lights go green. That's assuming he/she/it hasn't RLJ'd.

Where's this hill around southport where it's possible to do 40? Maybe I'm slow but I never managed that on any of the minor rises in the flat surrounding area in many years of riding round there. -

out by parbold n westhead n ormskirk
you can get some speed up
know one lad can get 45 on the flat on mtbs but hes got monster legs n used to racewhere you from ? still round here ?
-
• #65
Parbold fair enough for 40+. Used to live in Up Holland and ride with Wigan Wheelers so spent a lot of time round that area. The challenge used to be setting all the speed cameras off which seemed to be installed on the hills in the area. Been in London village for a few years now but keep meaning to do a fixed tour of all the old rest stops we used to use in the NW.

ahhh im in formby
its still shit round here

The Highway Code is advisory. The only bits that reference actual laws (RTA, TSRGD etc.) are prepended with "You MUST".
It's not exhaustive of all laws relating to being on the road, but it's a pretty good summary of all applicable laws.
So, if there is nothing stating that you "MUST" not filter on the left of vehicles, then you can be fairly certain there is no law against it.
I would say that it is pretty far from being vague on this.
Yes, undertaking cars is not unlawful. It is, however, as everyone knows, often not 'OK'. One thing that novice cyclists often have to learn is that you don't have to filter to the front at all costs (which cyclists do along the nearside more often than not). It is usually just as good to take your place in the queue, especially if the queue isn't long.

+1 Oliver! Just because there's an ASL you shouldn't desperately try to get in it at a red light.
Filtering is a minefield.
As for left-undertakers on cycles... tsk.

It sometimes feels like I'm the only person in London who does this.
-
• #72
undertaking is fine in stationary traffic if there is no junctions.
if there are junctions you should always slow right down and prepare to stop in case there are cars turning in or turning off.
in moving traffic its the same approach but always be aware of cars pulling to the side to stop, as this will block your route.
that is all.

• #73
surely if you didn't undertake at all cycling would be just as infuriating as i hear driving is. and it would take me about an hour to commute rather than 30min.
-

But I go faster than all the other people in queue because I'm pulling an awesome trackstand and I'm ready to pounce as soon as the first amber photon graces the back of my eyeballs. So the rules are different for me right?
-
• #75
my general view is to be aware of the rule of the road but to actually do what keeps myself and other road users safe
so utfb, read the situation, is it safe?... then go
generally undertaking is risky, its why i hate cycle paths as they effectively leave you undertaking and leave you hidden from most other road users
32,000 google links don't come for free.
