Then they changed tack and started telling him it's because of H&S fire risk blah fucking blah.
H&S - the excuse crutch of the jobsworth
Bike locks are a H&S concern. Fact.

Just been hearing this annoying story about a feller(a pal's father in law) who is a rather rareified gent. He rides his beloved Brompton (he is a folder nut, got loads of 'em) to a gymnasium. The gym' have asked him not to bring his (folded) Brompton in. WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT OF A BROMPTON? Arseholes.
Happen to me when I was working in a pub, borrowed my missus' brompton because it was more convience than locking the bike outside, going in the massive pub (those wetherspoon rubbish), then go in the loading area, unlocked the back door then bring in the bike.
despite having a foldable brompton, they're telling me the same thing, not allowed, bring it into the back instead of the staffroom like my other bike, and cited health and safety.

Put the brompton in a bag- then it's just luggage surely?
They cannot ask you to leave a suitcase outside.

Moot, I don't work there anymore.
Lynx, please harden up your internet skill, this is not the first time you've shown your inability to use the internet.

Well... I would imagine they're just trying to edge him out cos his face don;t fit: He's very stylish, attractive, sometime model, art teacher and VERY cool. People who have spray tans and drive 4x4s are afraid of people who are stylish. FACT.

2nd post
Seriously. People are trying to help. You are not listening.
You have one mouth and two ears - you should use them in that proportion.
Having had motorcycles stolen, I learnt, the hard way, that thacham and sold secure security standards are a joke. If you don't believe me you tube captain cropper.
That lock thread mentions size, ok important but not as important as the method the metal parts are harded etc, it also affected by the shape of the security (square, round or oval etc). Yes I learnt alot (Thanks to Maxine at almaax and capt cropper) it also that anything that carries the nme Oxford I will avoid after having so many of their gold secure chains/cable gone through in seconds silently.
We have many stolen bike threads, there doesn't seem to be a mention of the security breached, and how. That way with knowledge we can be better prepared to defeat bike thieves.

a popular question asked by mr scoble in many of the stolen bike threads is HOW WAS YOUR BIKE LOCKED AND WHAT LOCK?
sorry if i missed something.

Surely it is the staff that are not allowing the Bromptonenger in to the gym, rather than the perma-tanned patrons with the 4X4?
Or is your point that they have brow beaten the staff into refusing entry to the gentleman in question because his very existence impugns their own?

Exactly.
Its seems a bit harsh at the time, but does help share valuble information. Its not just the lock but how you use it. Which is demonstrated by the brilliant use of two top quality locks in Edscobles first post. -

He does, but searching stolen and the last few days only one lock mentioned and how it was breached was down to poor use and not down to lock failure.

No security is absolute. Any lock can be broken, given the right tools and enough time.
Bike locks are a constant balance between security and usability.
True but trying to find that balance.
The standards are an indication of the relative security, and, as such, are very valuable.
There was a single type of Oxford lock that could be opened with a biro, if I recall.
It was all oxford round keys and Kyrpotnite (sp) round key locks that failed by that mathod. Strangely the cheaper locks did not. K dmitted it and replaced the locks whilst oxford only replaced the locks after press preasure.
Apart from the thread of stolen bikes and the locks that were used.
Or Stolen bikes - lock database , as the locals like to call it.
Thank you for the link to that post, I'll pm Fox.

Is there a term for the utterly thick? Giftedly challenged?
If you cannot find out about locks on here I am fucking concerned for your safety on the road.
Perhaps the sub forum for the sub average could involve a series of tests for people to overcome do they can be allowed to play with the grown ups.

Ok then, if you are not to be in the group do a search that answers my question.
(PS Fox's is the closest so far and that is just collating the information, not giving out. The Lock list, mentioned in the thread post 2, includes a list locks some of can be very simply breached)

lynx
there may not be an exact thread that answers your question but if you do some research there is probably most of the information you require to make an informed purchase
additionally there are other bike websites etc
the question as to what lock combo to use is addressed countless fucking times - use 2 different types of locks and lock the bike intelligently (shit that may be hard for you) - ie make sure there is not loads of space in a d-lock, make sure locks are not near the ground etc
there is a list of locks...
etc etc etc
so fucking use your brain, read between the lines and make an intelligent informed decision
if you have questions about the subject then add them to already existing threads
is it really that fucking difficult, am guessing internet mum took one look at you and put you up for adoption

to be honest we should not have to answer such moronic banal questions for you
-

OK. I reread the question after you edit to clarify things.
Well I have done a search but my searchfu skills are poor.
Is there a definitive thread about cycle security, on the stolen bike thread there isn't really mention of the locks/security that were defeated, maybe it should mention, if known, how the lock was defeated.
Clearly not. But you have been pointed to the Stolen Bikes thread where the question has been asked but not answered.
So what kind of lock/chain/security combo would you recommend? Should we divide a section so we can provide advice for differing price brackets. Is this here already?
Yes there is a section on locks with price brackets and lots of banter about locks. You received the link, read the thread.
Ok then, if you are not to be in the group do a search that answers my question.
You don't like the answers, ask a better question.

cheers chris for your more considered response than my furious keyboard bashing
After the boring practical bit, this response got better and better. Clubs are shit anyway. Hugs not drugs.
Still can't bring myself to get a beater. But I don't go anywhere where my bike's not welcome either inside or very very close by.

Apparently they think it looks dirty or ugly or something, lowering the tone of a Nice Gym To Which People Drive Massive Cars, In Order To Get Fit. Then they changed tack and started telling him it's because of H&S fire risk blah fucking blah.
Oh, sorry, back to the flaming.
