• come on people...these insults are really not below par. you're not trying hard enough.

  • already at 165...dont want to go shorter, but thanks

  • Are you taking corners like this?

hah! i wish! can't say i would wear a helmet like that. there is a chap who rides around cambridge with a black roman centurions helmet on with a huge gold spike on it. him and i might tough it out for tool of the month.

  • Just popped upstairs to the bike store with a tape measure- centre of my bottom bracket is a whisper under 29.5cm from the ground.

    Are you riding a conversion?

  • Try find a route with as many straight lines as possible.

    Get shorter cranks.
Get a bike with more clearance between BB and the ground.
Don't buy brand new pedals - it will make you feel more miserable.

    thanks

is 25.5cm from the ground pretty low as it goes?
why will new ped's make me more mis? surely new bike stuff = stoked

    really not below par?

    so above par then...

    that's good right?

As I said above it's 4cm lower than mine, plus your pedals are pretty large.

  • on a more constructive note - switch to 32c? or do the cages come off your pedals?

nope riding a blb 56cm track frame

  • UTMFS Properly: http://www.londonfgss.com/thread5606.html

    cheers...helps...didnt see that

  • Mine's a larger frame than that- essentially a 58cm.

I don't know how the BB height changes with frame size but would assume that it would have to stay roughly the same as otherwise a small frame would get pedal strike on the banking- could someone with more knowledge chime in?

  • As I said above it's 4cm lower than mine, plus your pedals are pretty large.

4cm is a lot...an yeah, peds are wrong for the bike, but its currently my only bike so wanted a black ped i could use with cleats and shoes for pootling into town. not many great options.

  • What cranks are you using as I just changed my Campag pistsa cranks 165mm, no pedal strike to AC Mini LE cranks 165mm and now have pedal strike, this is on my polo bike.
The reason is my Pista cranks are straight and the AC's have a shallow dog leg.
They are about 25mm further out. does this make sense?

The reason was to change from 144bcd to 130 bcd. Smaller chainrings.
Now have some Sinz (straight) cranks, problem solved.

  • Are you taking corners like this?

Barry Sheene, what a legend! R.I.P.

  • Q factor could have a significant part to play.

  • on a more constructive note - switch to 32c? or do the cages come off your pedals?

er...32c? you mean bigger wheels/tyres? pretty happy with the set up so might just swap peds first.

not really getting these comments re. the track. surely if you get you're line right the incline of the bank means you don't get strike.

  • not really getting these comments re. the track. surely if you get you're line right the incline of the bank means you don't get strike.

That would be true if you went around the corners perpendicular to the angle of the banking, i.e. with the bike at 90 degrees to the effective floor.

In my experience (as the worlds slowest track rider it has to be said) you end up more or less vertical with reference to the actual ground rather than the banking as you go around the corner, therefore the right hand pedal at the bottom of the pedal stroke is fairly close to the banking that you are riding on.

Hence the need for a high bottom bracket and a short crank relative to road bikes.

  • For example- only the right hand side of my tyre picked up dust whilst going around the banking, i.e. I was not relying on the full width of the tyre, merely the right hand side due to the angle of the bike with respect to the angle of the banking.

yup makes perfect sense. ultimately the frame size is working out a tad too small and i've really dinged one of the tubes. so might look out for a new frame. quite like a lo pro and would suit...anyone got any recommendations?

  • Q factor could have a significant part to play.

    wuts dat?

  • What GrowUp was talking about- how wide apart your pedals are due to the design of the cranks.

hmm...ok. never ridden track myself so just assumed, though ridden a million and one banks on a skateboard. figured you would just wang it and try and stay roughly perp with the bank.

from what you've said, about how a track BB should be higher it sounds like my blb track bike is actually nothing of the sort.

  • my blb track bike is actually nothing of the sort.

    Bingo!

ah-ha...nope straight as. got a paul crank (also waits for barrage of shit - personally i love it)
