  • ... planet x merino ...

Fair enough, in any case the planet X merino base layer is sensationally cheap.

160g merino.. would you wear that as a you only layer for proper sunny days? Or gym workouts?

I am wondering if they could serve as an alternative to the ubiquitous Helly Hansen stripe long sleeve? It would be great, it is cheaper than most synthetic base layers and would have the added benefits of wool.

  • I bought a long and a short sleeve. I'm not sure what 160g actually will look or feel like but they should be arriving today, I'll let you know.

  • anyone recommend any short sleeve base layers that are particularly long in the body?

  • Does anyone know what xxxg the Rapha standard and winter base layers are? They mention the micron rating of the yard, but not material weight. I've sworn by them (std, yet to try a winter one) for years, but at that price Planet X are shifting them at, my loyalties may be about to change.

  • Any more opinions on the Oregon cyclewear?

People who bought it - how has it held up?

  • ^^^ Red Ram (Icebreaker) are pretty long

Still waiting for mine to arrived.

  • My order from Oregon arrived a couple of weeks ago - 7 jerseys for me and some colleagues, with custom embroidery including our surnames on the arms. I've only worn mine once (on the BHF LtB ride on Sunday) but I'm impressed so far. The embroidery was just what I asked for, they arrived quickly, and they've been sufficiently well-received that it looks like we'll be having a second order fairly soon, with even non-cyclists saying they'd like one.

As ever with merino, they were cool when it was hot and warm when it was cold. Obviously I can't say how well they'll wear, but the quality's very good and I'm hopeful it'll last well.

The sizing is pretty generous though, albeit the sizing guide is accurate. I normally wear a large size jersey, even in Castelli and other slim-fitting brands, whereas a medium Oregon jersey fits me nicely.

  • i have had craft stuff and they are longer than helly.

  • Cheers for the replies, reckon I'll go for it.

Ed, let us know what yours is like when you get it.

  • Mine's forever said "DEPART USPS SORT FACILITY" since the 5th.

  • Incidentally after I wrote that, I saw the silver card at home, went to the office, paid the "handling fees" and picked it up yesterday.

It's awesome, well fitted, colour look nice, really long (finally) and feel very comfortable, looking forward to the cold days as I'm fed up of having short sleeve merino cycling top, will order a short sleeve version soon in the near future.

Can confirm sizing is generous (medium as pictured), but does not mean it's too big, a Rapha's medium fit me perfectly.

  • Hanging to the right today?

  • Looks lovely. Cheers for posing the photo.

    Edit: Jersey, not cock.

  • Got the Planet-X merino base layer in the post. One day delivery for free on a 20 quid item is great service.

But the fit of the top is terrible. Sending this straight back.

  • Terrible in what way?

  • the torso is a really wide tub, whilst arms are a bit on the tight side.

the effect is that the armpit of the garment is nowhere near my own armpit and instead ends up way down somewhere on the inside of my upper arm. lifting my arm up makes the whole garment lift up in a weird way.

  • ^^^^^^^ Tasty.

  • Aside from Helly Hansen, I'm finding it difficult to find which brands have polypropylene base layers rather than simple poly ones. They all rebrand and give it a naf name; uberdry etc.

Anyone recommend brands they use that have decent synthetic (polypropylene) base layers?

  • ^ burn him

  • With petrol, not the normal whale oil we reserve for burning woolly types.

According to wiki, the new generation of polyesters give better performance than polypro, with less of the high heaven stinkage.
    For what it's worth.

  • ^ Interesting. Link to the article?

Am keen to get some decent synthetics, does it recommend brands? After recovering from 3rd degree burns of course...

  • Patagonia capilene are good. Wore one for a ski season and it didn't get smelly, especially compared to a friend's HH which he was washing constantly.
