He can move it back then. Are we having a thread for every brand of merino retailer?

  • We have one for Rap-ha

  • Up to you? If you reckon Embers warrant their own thread I'll move it out.

Rapha are a bit more cycling oriented though so it makes a bit more sense.

  • Rapha don't just sell merino though, they sell a lifestyle. :P

  • Unmerge

    Unmerge

  • Was not my idea for a separate thread

They will be fucked if the thread has me as the OP on here

  • Better in here than in the Torm thread.

  • Rapha don't just sell merino though, they sell a lifestyle. :P

    What is that lifestyle?

It seems to be riding with a cap instead of a helmet, climbing hills in inclement weather, obsessing about espresso coffee and harboring sinful desires whilst crying yourself to sleep at night over the sheer injustice of life.

  • You forgot the grooming.

  • leg shaving grooming or chatting to teenagers in internet chat rooms grooming?

    Actually it's both isn't it.

  • It's not a frigging baselayer!

  • The Embers Merino base layer?

  • No gillet

  • Well that's OK, the thread title is Merino Clothing, base layers are merely given as an example of such thing.

  • And I've just checked, the gillet has a merino shell (on topicness) with a polyester outer. Seems to be the right thread for it.

Whereas Torm shouldn't be in here, as that's sportwool rather than Merino.

    Finally, sanity prevails.

  • The embers gillet arrived today

To be honest the material is fairly similar to my rapha sportswool items such as the winter jersey. I had expected it to be two distinct layers, a merino one and a polyester outer layer. In fact it appears that the polyester is a coating on the outside of the merino layer. So possibly a sportswool analogue would be a reasonable description.

I have been struggling to manage temperature on my commutes at the moment, full sleeves have left me a little too warm, so hoping the gillet will be the perfect between season layer.

I can also see myself wearing it under a softshell or the greenspot jacket if things get very cold this winter.

On initial inspection it appears to be well made and fit is good. It does not have elastic adjusters at the hem but does have a non slip rubber strip instead.

I also got a couple of pairs of socks at the same time, they are made by the NZ sock company, and appear to be quite similar to some smartwool socks I have. They are slightly more technical than the Rapha ones with higher degree of construction and structure.

  • I got a base layer from Embers today, came with a nice handwritten note:

Many thanks for your order, have a great week! Many thanks, Chris

    Thank you Chris, you too!

  • Arducius

coming along to the PBP meeting on Friday?

Mattha, clubman, tsk, teddy and myself

    ride out on Saturday

  • ooh, like that embers gillet. good fit?

  • I went for the large, it is cut quite long (which I prefer on cycling tops) and the material is very stretchy

Can see it getting a lot of use this winter both on and Offroad.

  • ♮see my jodphurs made of gophers
♮just like my sportswool analog (hand fashioned)
    ♮smartwool technical socks
♮merino base layer^H^H^H^H^H [kill me now]
