  • Is it your A&R that broke? Might be worth opening it up and seeing if anything obvious has burnt out.

  • Maybe Project Maia, maybe too expensive though. Anything Class D is a crap shoot. Not that I avoid using class D stuff but you're lucky it didn't take the speakers out as well.

  • @kboy yep, pretty much, phone and airport express so errrrr maybe phono and 3.5 actually?! Actually I have a 3.5 to 2x 3.5 coming out my airport so yeah, aux and phono

@Well_is_it prob is I have 100% no idea what I would be looking for. I feel its prob a real small easy capacitor/thingimy bob fix but no way of knowing without dropping near £100, and then it could happen to any other part of it...

@Airhead Maia could be a goer, price is fine, a little bland on the design front though maybe for my tastes...

  • It's not the greatest design wise. Form follows function and all that. The Stereo Box S Phono has a less cluttered front panel and does most of the same job, no headphone socket.

  • That looks fun, I guess I could work out how to use it, but then I'd have to work out how to replace the bust bit?

  • I really wouldn’t go poking around in a power amp if you don’t know what you’re doing!
Even with the power off there’s plenty of potential (lols) death. Or at least a nasty shock/burn.
If you like the amp at least get it on a bench to be looked at - the repairer will probably have a good idea of whether it’s going to go again and any possible mitigation.

  • Could just be a dodgy solder joint on the input or output connectors. They do tend to run warm and the plugs usually see a bit of wiggle.

I suppose it won't be input because you'll have tried all the different inputs.

  • Urgh. Got amp repaired. Found another fault (although may be just a dusty switch). Then found hard-wired cables from turntable are to blame for uneven stereo balance.

Now I've found a constant low-level crackle/hiss coming from the left channel that wasn't there before. It's quiet but it's definitely there. Repair guys swear blind it was working perfectly when he'd done with it. I can't be sure the noise was there when I first turned it on after repair of it's a new thing. will try swapping over speakers and cables this week but have a nasty feeling this is another niggle that needs addressing.

  • Best way to make a turntable keep better time? Platter looks a little warped, huge weight in tye centre might help it maybe, anything off the shelf and cheap?

Also it seems to "clip" pretty bad on anything aggressive sounding (most og my music), suspect a bad/cheap cartridge, or maybe it has some sort of nasty pre amp built into it as the level coming out of it barely needs a photo amp to get it to a good level for amp to deal with.
Tried many different weights and amounts of anti skate, suspect it's either internal electronics or tone arm is a bit out of line?

  • This is what I am keen to avoid... the near never ending repair loop. Where'd you get yours repaired? Barletts or whatever on Holloway Road may be my best option...

  • Details of what you're trying to tune there? Sounds pretty bad.

  • Anyone got any innovative ideas for CD storage? I have about 8 metres worth.
Should I just make my own shelves?

  • Vitsoe. Just finished the CD storage side of my Vitsoe splurge. Bearing in mind I make custom furniture and I've been looking at/building different designs for the time I've had my flat (15 years) it's not a throwaway recommendation.

I should probably get a job with Vitsoe, I love the stuff.

  • We have these, works well as long as you don't mind the industrial look.
    Website from 1979 as well.

  • these are all megabucks compared to making some shelves.
think of all the CDs I could buy with my savings!

  • Rip to NAS and put CDs in a box somewhere.

  • You'll get yours one day. Just stop eating sandwiches, drinking and city breaks, you'll have saved the money in no time.

  • You had me up until "stop".... to be fair I'm more of a String kinda guy...

  • Got a very cheap (sub £100 for the lot) Denon and Tannoy hifi yesterday. Goddamn I forgot what listening to music sounded like. Treble! And sub bass! What even is this madness!

  • Nice! Pics pls. WHat Tannoy? potential for boner...

  • Ha nothing boner-inducing, they're very cheap - M3 floorstanding speakers, nothing to make a hifi nerd salivate. But I've been listening to music on a single set of 3" reference speakers for the last five years and goddamn the difference to me is astonishing.

Here's the pic. Can't wait to load up some really obnoxious video game and have it blasting through those speakers:
