  • no. Surround systems are crap value (unless you're absolutely loaded), spend the money on a decent two-channel and upgrade later if you really want surround sound.

I think in average living rooms it takes up too much space if positioned properly, and doesn't really make the movie experience a huge amount better. If you've got a dedicated theatre room, go for it, but I'm really not a fan of the satellite/sub systems almost everyone has these days. A big midrange hole and they sound like shit for music. Better to get two big floorstanders and a decent amp, will last for 20 years, job done.

thanks, see that's the kind of thing I needed to hear, I got me a pretty good stereo already with hefty floor standers(I was toying with using those as the main speakers as it was), I might just hook that up to the amp and see how I go

edit: this is my current amp I think

Sounds like a great idea. This is how I listen to music anyway, but a lot of people just have it on in the background whilst reading or working or driving. I think listening for the sake of listening is quite different and you get a lot more out of the music.

I have read back the above, and I sound like a twat.

Yeah - just saw it in the thread list :)

  • Have a Heybrook TT2 that I am looking to move on (use a modified Lenco GL75/rega250 instead) - but it doesnt currently have an arm (has an armboard cutout for a Linn arm)
Sounds not dissimilar to an LP12 but is much easier to adjust the suspension due to the bolts being accessed from the top instead.

Nice TT2... and cheap. Have you sell it? Shame I've got too many turntable!

If you want to modify a Lenco, I know an expert on the subject, he's done many of them... And gave me advice when I did mine. I have a spare GL75 that I will tweak at some point as there are so many inspiring projects arround!

My one (sorry I posted it already here)

And one of Francois (the master)'s realisations:

With a Thomas Shick tonearm for SPU... He's done so many more, all including technical inovations, his works are amazing...

  • Ah, I have a GL78 kicking around that I had similar plans for.... didn't know you were into it Loic

  • haha - thats what i have done with the lenco - replinthed it and using a rega rb250 arm - sounds stunning :) doesnt look nearly as pretty though....

  • will put up some details of the rest of my setup at somepoint - Fostex fe167 based mass loaded transmission line speakers and a gainclone power amp :)

My first setup on the lenco was with a RB-250 too (armboard is replacable and can take 12 inches) with a Ortofon 2M red, but then I wanted to use a DL-103 cartridge so I needed a more suitable arm, hence the Thorens TP-25, which is not a god in precision, but result is really pleasing, especially on older jazz LPs and monos... It forgives more bad condition LPs...

  • @spagettihoops

you don't need noise canceling. Sennehiser HD25i is an excellent travel headphone. Closed back so you can't hear other people and other people can't hear you.

    I agree

  • I think my amp has had lived it's life... it's 10-15 year old Denon that hasn't been used much, spent most of it's time in loft. Recently attached wharfedale diamonds to it and it's been great. However now it simply delivers white noise when plugged into anything. A few times before this it would be playing then switch to white noise, after turning amp off and on again it would be up and running again. Time for a new amp? It's pretty dusty inside, all fuses are okay, doesn't appear to be anything else blown.

    Anybody have any advice?

    Cheers

I was using an old-ish Denon recently and it was only coming through one speaker, i just took the casing off and went crazy with a can of compressed-air duster, seemed to do the trick!

  • hoover and a brushe to get the dust up, will do the trick too

  • Some free Jordan Watts speakers if anyone's interested:

    Details please.

  • just gauging interest.
would anyone be intersted in a pair of PMC tb2 in oak?

a couple of tiny creases in the metal tweeter from baby's prying fingers and faint mark in the veneer (was going to get a wax furniture pencil and touch it up but it's not that visible)
you can upgrade to TB2-s spec tweeters at any PMC dealer

these have a great rep in both hi-fi and music production .

great speakers but a bit big for the room is £350 too much to ask?

  • they are the cheaper black studio version too.

  • Does anyone know where in east london I can get a Marantz amplifier repaired? I took it to a guy on Bethnal Green rd but he couldnt figure it out -I'm pretty sure its just a burnt out resistor though.

There's a couple of hi-fi shops on dalston lane - they might be able to fix it.

  • Does anyone know where I can buy some replacement speakers? I recently found a pair of beautiful pair JBL L150 in a skip. One of them is in good working order however its partner has a torn woofer and I want to try a replace it?

  • A quick google suggests you may be able to get replacement drive units from JBL themselves...
