  • Little oak speakers are currently connected to chip-amp with a chromecast audio plugged straight in. Need to reduce the CCA output by about half. Don’t need a volume control or want another box, can’t be arsed soldering a decent pot into the chip amp. Is there a in-phono-line deely that’ll reduce the signal by ~50%?

Edit: yea, but they’re more expensive than an Alps blue pot. Fire up the soldering iron.

  • Thanks for this. Familiar ish with it in a professional set up (always sat next to the lighting desk doing the audio, usually too focused to look at what they were doing!) which was what led me to wonder if it may be an option for home users.

Agree re lag, seen that with the couple of hue bulbs that sync with Spotify at the moment. But can adjust those in the Hue app to mostly get round it. Hadn’t factored in the lighting on/off into the mix as well though.

Hadn’t considered a TV as a light source. Room that the music is in doesn’t have a TV (or any tech, other than hifi!) but might try that downstairs and see if it’s an option

  • I've got the Dali's, for the reason that they're designed to work close up to the wall and that they're small enough to put in a bookshelf. Not ideal I know but I've gotta work with the space I've got.

The place before had a large rectangular living room, and I had some floor standing Q Acoustics. Was much better acoustically.

Just about to move again but I've no idea where I'm gonna put the hi-fi, and I wanted to get some different speakers (possibly Elac Unifi) but the options there are terrible, and I'd rather not have to resort to head phones.

  • Cheers for the reply @Dogs

Even budget hifi gear has a pretty deep rabbit hole to peer down, I've decided to adjust the shelving, so current speakers will fit, then (probably sooner than later) I'm gonna get a nice budget set up, front runners at the moment are a Rotel A11 Tribute paired with Dali Spektor 2 speakers, using the built in Bluetooth DAC to start with.
Really looking forward to having another way of spending my wages ;)

Edit: rather enjoyed cheapaudioman and darko reviews, both offering reviews in language even I understand.

  • reviews in language even I understand

Shouting then, in the case of cheap audio man?

What's tempting you with the Rotel? And are heading the Bluetooth route because you've got a streaming service on your phone?

  • Ha, he is a bit shouty, but the volume button takes care of that. The pair of em don't seem overly hung up with the numbers, which is fine by me.
The Rotel gets good reviews, probably a little better built than Cambridge Audio (less plastic), not as far east looking as marantz and yamaha (obviously apart from the Japanese text on the badge), I stream off my tablet, and when the film warrants it, connect my tv. Bluetooth also helps with my slight cable phobia (bit OCD about being able to see them), so fewer cables makes me happier.

  • He's alright. I quite admire his ability to talk for so long about one thing.

If you're streaming music maybe look for a receiver that does streaming. It wasn't a feature I ever thought I'd use as I've been like "I'll just buy the music", but actually it's probably the feature I use the most along (after getting tidal) with the optical in for the TV. Bluetooth sounds a bit dead to me TBH and I'll only use it as a last resort. I get you on the cables, I went from a NAD with an airport express, Bluetooth receiver, phono stage, optical dac to having it all built in in this Onkyo. It's freed up a lot plug sockets if nothing else.

If you're struggling for space some older Japanese hifi components are half the depth of what I'd consider to be normal these days.

  • Can you not just turn down the CCA in the home app?

  • I've been like "I'll just buy the music"

I was totally in this place for decades.

Likewise, Tidal subscription changed that, I also use a wired connection for playing Tidal on hifi (BT for car and headphones)

  • Yeah, but the range is 1% to 15% so not very granular. Also been blasted 100% by google assistant once or twice so want to avoid that.

  • Second hand chifi DAC to avoid the glorious world of preamps?

  • 🤙🏻

  • Nice Table of Curiosities.

  • Built some quite tall cabinets (1m) some time ago, and the speakers designer ( I was following plans) said acoustically definitely NOT solid wood cabinetry at that size. He recommended MDF panels, with birch ply bracing inside, so that's what I did.
I then decided to rosewood veneer the whole thing - now that stretched my woodworking skills. Advice veneer a small box first!

  • Will be taking delivery next week of the Rotel A11 Tribute and a pair of Dali Spektor 2 speakers, stops me over thinking it, which generally leads to me doing nowt about it.
Phoned Richer Sounds rather than ordering online, well worth it, got an extra £50 off the speakers, had also signed up to their VIP thingy before making the call, that got me an extra £10 off, so all in with next working day delivery, £588, I'm rather pleased with that.
Will report back once I've given my new budget system a test listen.

  • Nice!

    Looking forward to the review.

  • That was the price for the A11 and speakers? If so that’s a great price. The A11 by itself stateside is $799 lol!

  • Yep, A11 is £399, Dali Spektor 2s £249 on their site.

  • And what is that?

  • One of these without the packaging

  • That's disgusting.. Just a volume control.. Disappointed in both of you.

  • Just compiling a test playlist for new gear day. So far......
Lady Blackbird - Beware the Stranger/Collage
Fleetwood Mac - Gold Dust Woman
    Soundgarden - 4th of July
    Beastie Boys- Intergalactic
    Eat Static- Hybrid
Should give it a decent work out.

  • Just had a lol blasting Beastie Boys. If you want to test deep sub-base White Elephant by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is a good one

  • Not so much a bass test, just tunes I'm very familiar with, covering most of the bases: male/female vocal, sludgy heavy guitar, squelch n fart (a technical term that relates to trance), anything by the Beastie Boys would have done : but the intro on Intergalactic is brilliant.
Should probably add some instrumental jazz, John Coltrane or Herbie Hancock should cover that.
