Swan 45?! Awesome. You'll need a few handy guys though, that's a powerful boat.
Some mates of mine t-boned one on the start line of a race once.....
Dibs ;)i took the helm of a 50ft swan class formosa a few years back, brought it back into lymington harbour after a day out around the solent, that was some experience, it handled really well, but i don't have the experience to skipper this trip.. this is the closest i've got, three days racing from cowes..
http://www.littlebritain.co.uk/web/code/php/main_c.php?map=lbcc11&ui=2011&style=std&override=§ion=homei need to get some qualifications if i want to go off-shore..
solent-cannes-solent will not be a cheap gig..
reckon on at least £2,000 each..
budget of £16,000..but what a trip !!!

I've raced a Ker 11.3 before - that rates pretty close to a Swan 45. Offshore is awesome though - had our last distance race of the year to Belgium last weekend.

we should chat.. where are you based?
the Ker 11.3 looks good, how many berth?
how much to charter for off-shore sailing? -
• #235
London - work central, live south
The ker is a great boat to sail but not to live on. Has a couple of fold down pipe cots down below and some relatively flat bits of fibreglass in places.... but that's it.
I did a 200 mile offshore race on one and sleeping options - even for a small off watch crew - were pretty poor. We all slept in the cockpit in harbour after the race. To save weight the engine casing has no soundproofing so engine hours are miserable. The engine is very underpowered too so all in all I wouldn't recommend one for too long a passage!

Done a fair chunk of sailing and racing too, sounds an awesome trip, and a swan 45 would be perfect. Thing is though am reaching an age where I'm too old for camping, so however much I dream of fast racing yachts, screaming along at night.... frankly each night I wanted to be tucked up in port with hot and cold flushing toilets, a bar and a decent restaurant. That said, so want a go on those cat's.

i am also of an age where, i'd prefer a bit of comfort.. but i'd want to keep any on-shore costs to a minimum.. if that meant dropping anchor in a remote spot every other night, have plenty of food rations on board to cover us for a week, that could be a good compromise.
could we get there in five (fine weather) days?
then four days in/around Cannes.. sleep on-shore, i might be able to blag a sofa or its the gutter bar..
or fuck it hire a villa for eight with infinity pool up in the hills :))
five days back.. -

Not a prayer I'm afraid. From the Solent it's approx 2000nm and that's the shortest route. 400nm days are beyond a Swan 45 unless you've got absolutely exceptional weather. In all likelihood you'd be on the wind until you're out of the Western Approaches anyway which is never the quickest!
If time is of the essence why not charter a boat down that way?

I crossed the channel twice to/from the Isles of Scilly with paper/pencil/compass only nav. and ended up 1mile off on a First 40.7 can I play?
I have accommodation with swimming pool in the hills to offer near Grasse :) -

my first reply...
Hi Alan. Good to hear from you. Will have a chat with Dad about yacht hire. Would need a pretty experienced crew to get across bay of biscay. Can be pretty treacherous. Sounds pretty cool though! Will try to get some info for you.

we would be heading to Cannes Lions film festival week.. ideal arrival day would be tuesday.. depart sunday.. so worse case scenario from solent in days ??

sounds good Cedywedy, i love Grasse.. damn, this might mean i'm gonna have to secretly post my bike over.. -

10 days would be doable but you'd need an experienced team happy to spend that long at sea and keep the boat going - 15 days probably more realistic. Biscay as you say can be tough so you'd need a weather window. Ideally you want to go far enough offshore to go round the outside of the shelf.
