I had the in-laws round all weekend so didn't get a much of a chance to play :(
So I'm still trying to get to grips with it. I'm not sure if I'm disappointed yet or not.
The physics are identical to GTA (no surprise I suppose) but I think in some ways that's a fault. They don't seem to have been improved upon what has gone before and seeing the fluidity of MW2 (for example) I would have liked a similar feel. The gamplay is also structured like GTA which again is a bit 'tedious' in that I've been there, done that, how about something new?
I think how Oblivion and Fallout 3 - both by the same company and both using the same engine (I think) were completely different in terms of mood and game play. I almost think that RockStar have rested on their laurels and haven't pushed it too far. That said my impression might change with a few hours of play. I did enjoy the hunting stuff to make money.
I am a massive fan of Oblivion and Fallout 3, and of bethesda in general - TES is a fantastic series of games and their work on the Fallout series was nothing short of breath taking, BUT.....
What fucks me off about both games is some of the mechanics that didn't change at all. The conversation system is bad, and the lack of variety in voice acting (in the case of oblivion, quality as well - Sheogorath??! w.t.f. was that.)
In many ways it's only bad because other games have demonstrated how it should be done (mass effect). Still I was disappointed not to see that change between the two games.
I guess what i'm saying is, that sort of stuff is common in the games industry, and it is a valid criticism of all the games in your post. :)

yea some good points about the sameyness of games qckpckt.
having played games now since 70s (yes i am ancient) when we got pong at home and then we got space invaders at the chippy, there has always been one good original idea then loads of not disimilar riffs of that idea (unbelievable how many variations of pong there were).
for example every FPS is the same kind of gameplay with slight tweaks (metroid bought loneliness and scanning stuff, halo brought clever AI, Gears of war brought stick to cover, Half life had a solid narrative told in game rather than cut scenes, modern warfare had viceral cinematic action etc) but ultimately your still shooting stuff which is fun.
trouble is whenever a completely new gaming concept arrives people are so used to similarity so don't buy something too differnt so they are not commercial successes so gems like Ico, rez, katamari, eternal darkness etc didn't do too well initially.
At least there are developers still prepared to experiment so we have braid and portal recently. I do think that games being developed for XBLA and PSN as well as for iphone are cheaper to develop so we may yet get get devcos taking more risks with gameplay and enter an era of some really unique IP. lets hope so...
Any way back to torch and shoot more of those things in the woods with alan wake.

+1
I still love playing daggerfall. It's an ancient game that is almost impossible to complete with a game area bigger than the UK. I haven't managed to get beyond the first town - i only just managed to get out of the first dungeon!
It is a fiendishly, massively impossible game that crashes all the time, and I still love it (if only for the insane horse noises that get louder when you enter your inventory and never EVER STOP). Such a game would never get made now.

Odd Xbox behavior: I'm sat watching a video through the Xbox (streaming from PC, but that shouldn't make a difference) and the controller is on the arm of the sofa. Suddenly, up pops the play/pause/stop/FF/RW menu at the bottom of the screen, then the selection changes. It's almost as if someone else had the controller. Except it was still sat next to me. Just after this my phone (also on the arm of the sofa) buzzed with a text message.
I assumed that the phone might have interfered with the controller somehow and continue watching. It happens again. But this time there is no activity from my phone.
It could have been that the battery in the controller was low, and that was causing odd behavior, but it would have been the first time this has happened. I normally wear the battery right down before charging.
Anyone else had this happen?

yeah..you have a real good point..i did like the go i had on it but i could imagine it being a bit boring, my mate just unlocked Mexico so going to have a go on it and hopefully there will be a bit more to it rather than miles of desert and creaks, random people around camp fires..end up getting in trouble real quick because youl be galloping for ages and not see anything and youl come across some campers and its so hard to resist blowing them away! -

Do it! the controls are actually really good, if you fiddle with the hotkeys a little bit. I play it on a macbook, using dosbox (works fairly well, it crashes but that game ALWAYS crashes regardless of how you run it). The multitouch mousepad translates the different weapon swings remarkably well!
I had two finger control turned on, and attack set to right click. 2 fingers swiping across touch pad from right to left initiates right to left swing. Awesome! There are loads of different swinging/stabbing actions as well, depending on how you move your mouse/fingers.
The first dungeon rocks. Enjoy it!

Daggerfall was the greatest!
That was one of the 1st games where I felt that stuff was happening throughout the rest of the game whether I was there to see it happen or not. I can remember I bought the strategy guide which is like a huge tome and finding out I could become a werewolf if bitten in the right circumstances. Stuff like that was magic to a geeky 14 year old. -

Um, are any of the cycling manager games any good?
I downloaded a demo of some game to my Xbox some time ago. It felt, well, different, but I was not prepared to pay for the full version. Graphics and presentation were cack and the gameplay felt clunky and lacking.

HARHAR, DOSBox is so much way out there besterer than all your modern new-fangled games, although it is of course beaten into a distant second place by the TI 99/4A emulator. :)

^ Oops, provocative off-topic post that should of course have gone in the Argument thread. :)

Anyone taken a step back from serious gaming & tried Modnation Racers?
It's a bit like Mario cart but for the PS3 - I think it's pretty fun, though it gets really hard after the first few races!

I thought I was stepping back for a bit of lighthearted fun when I downloaded Trails HD.
FAIL.

I've just downloaded the directors cut for my ipod. Haaaawshome!
I'm hoping someone has ported myst to it. Man that game confused the hell out of me as a 7 year old...

Broken Sword is one magnificent example of adventure gaming. Loved the game to bits. Good script, nice direction and all. Tried the first Monkey Island game after Broken and it felt, well, archaic. Might've done the job, design-wise, twenty years ago, but nowadays, it's just tired.

I love Broken Sword, it's a pretty good games, even though at time it can be a bit tricky to figure out where to go.
If anyone wanted to look for a new games in similar gameplay as Broken Sword, check out Fahrenheit, it's a DLC on the xbox.

I've been playing it on and off. I like it. Haven't played Heavy Rain, but as it is the same crew behind it, I'd think there's a lot of Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy, in the US) in there.

Good to know, been looking for something to fill in the void that Fahrenheit left, Heavy Rain look rather tempting.
-
• #924
Heavy rain was quite good Ed, you can literally change the games path by doing anything and I mean anything in the game.
For example, get in a car, don't do you seatbelt up. That will change something.Oh and the graphics on that game are lovely.
On a side note is Fahrenheit any good?

A bit clunky and long in the tooth, nowadays, but the atmosphere is still great. And, of course, the fact that no-one had done anything like it before, still makes it feel special (in a good way, mind). Not unlike Ico, in that sense.
Oh yeah: and in the European version you get to fuck! Ten points!
