Ed give us a budget and we'll help you.
If you don't mind building your own I've got a budget 300 machine that'll handle everything.

Honestly, as long it can play modern games and possible to upgrade it a bit, I'm happy, so around £500 is the most I can go.

Anything from current desk top you can use?
Need a monitor or happy to use tv (steam big picture is awesome by the way)
-
• #7630
Got a tv monitor that'll double up as a computer screen (samsung 1680x1050 22" LCD).

Good stuff. Check out the pc tech thread Ed.

(Correct me if I'm wrong) but games are become less and less reliant on CPU, so get the best GPU you can possibly afford, even if it means spending less on a CPU.

I notice that, and have a panty 256mb graphic card while games required 512mb min.
Wasn't long ago 32mb was pretty hefty.

Console and PC's have their places.
MMO = PC
FPS = PC
RTS = PC
Sports = Console
Driving = Console
Fighters = ConsoleThere are games that crossover well from one to the other like GTA, Skyrim, Assassins Creed etc, but mainly they each have their own uses for gaming. This is why I own consoles and a PC for gaming.
+1 - Agreed - that is exactly how I see it.

Id go for a i5 every time before an i7 spend more on ram and grahpics. Once the i5 slows down over clock it.
You'll get years out of it.

You are spot on!

Agreed - i5 is better bang for your buck, use the price difference on your graphics card.
Yeah you can get pre-packaged overclocked bundles from companies like overclockers.co.uk and yoyotech.
I'm using 2500K i5 which is regarded are being one of the best chips for overclocking. (Might have been superceed by now, my system was upgraded this time last year ago. Used my old graphics card until the AMD 7770 cards came out - roughly the same week as D3 coming out.)

Loving the Wii U... Was doing boring chores around the house today so managed to clock up over four hours of Mario...

Can anyone recommend some good PC emulators for old school consoles?
Preferable one that will work with XBMC.
Since my computer now can barely handle modern games, and I don't fancy going through the fuss of building my own computer up, is there's a decent OTP computer I can buy specifically for gaming?
Straw that broke the camel's back was the new Tomb Raider game.
To be fair, I shouldn't be using a Mac to play videogames in the first place, woefully underpowered!
Is this being Scobled?
I want a emulater for a Windows XBMC server and Ed scobles me when he wonders why his Mac doesn't do games?
Fuck you Eddy Scoble! Fuck you right in the ass!

Not sure if you guys enjoy Arma - but bugger me how good does it look.
If this isn't a reason to play it on PC I don't know what is...
Only £20 so well worth a punt.
If you buy in to the Alpha (testing version) you'll also get the full final version once it's released.

Same CPU as me. Haven't even needed to OC yet.
Only thing I do notice on games such as Battlefield and the Sims I've only got 4gb of RAM it doesn't affect the speed but loading takes a while.
Could be a HDD issue maybe?

It was long ago Ed.

I know I am using the worst possible computer for gaming (Mac Mini) but are there any tips for boosting performance? Can I over clock? It's got 8gb RAM and an SSD so actually runs ok, boarderlands 2 on a mid setting, that kind of thing.
Also, cant get used to mouse and keyboard (for games), should I just try harder? -
• #7645
Try wired xbox 360 controller.
-
• #7646
Cheers for the tip! Will try and hunt one out. Just tried CS at high settings, ran ok?
They use USB?
-
• #7647
I use a wired Xbox controller for playing games on my mac. So much better than keyboard / mouse.
-
• #7648
Brilliant! Is it a simple plug and play? Regular old xbox controller or 360 or?
-

Anyone played wii goldeneye?
I'm thinking of getting it almost purely because of playing the n64 version at uni... Is the multiplayer at least as good as it used to be?

360 controller. I've got one also and it's fantastic!
Don't worry, Ed, we all know that speccing your own components is your least favourite activity in the world. :)
