To be honest with you I always make a jack-of-all-trades, but judging by the more 'pro' guides I've read, they recommend giving all your SPECIAL points over to a couple of specific skills and make up the deficit with in-game collectables. Charisma is usually the first to suffer, you can always bully your way though dialogue.
I'm at a stage now where I'm having to make a genuinely hard decision, I'm completely torn. I might go with my heart. Siding with a certain group might alienate more powerful potential allies, but fuck it, at least when I retire the game to it's box I'll know I fought for the right cause, even if they're reclusive techno-monks.
I started off tagging Guns, Repair and Speech, with special something like 4,7,5,6,5,7,5 (can't remember exactly). But I realised lockpick is quite important. I nearly started a fresh, but I've become quite attached to my courier now. Picked the extra 2 skill points perk and slowly building them up.
If I did restart, I think I'd make a sneaky melee character. In fact I might just make a new character and see what its like. I find with games like this you always get a different experience.

Yeah, I'm at a stage now where engaging enemies with their knowledge of the battle feels crude, I'm sniping from distance, but it's taken a while to get weapons and power to do that. Stealthy play also means I can assassinate and plunder friendly parties without them hating my ass off.
There was one location quite early on, quite close to Goodsprings, that I kept walking past, through even, thought it was just a barren bit of wasteland, wasn't until much later that I realised what it was cryptic

Can't watch videos right now, what's with the giant ramp?
Just huge jumps and overly modded vehicles in multiplayer, heaps of fun.

I'm jumping back into the world of videogames after taking a 6 year hiatus.
Getting this soon:
http://www.game.co.uk/Consoles/Xbox-360/Xbox-360-250GB-with-Halo-Reach/I'm a fan of most FPS (as per the above) and moody action/RPG. Can anyone suggest a couple more? Looks like Fallout suit me...

Forgot about HL2. Played it on the PC, but only have a laptop now, which is nowhere near good enough. Cheers for the reminder.

Get the Orange Box - they have all the Half Life 2 episode, portal and some other muiltplayer games whose name escape me.
The beauty of your predicament is that the games will be incredibly cheap by now (like the Orange Box, Bioshock, Assassin Creed, Metro 2033, Red Dead Redemption, GTA4 including the download content etc.).

Oooooooh. Give us a clue ;-)
I've not been back to goodsprings, might head back and see if anythings changed.
Had a quick play last night, got to the main NCR camp south of the strip (McCerdy?). Picked up about 10 quests, all of them unrelated to the "main story". There is just sooo much to do in this game. Starting to get into the world of weapons mods. 9mm pistol with scope looks badass.

I'm kind of tempted to pick up Fallout NV. My only problem is that I played Fallout 3 loved it, completed the story line and felt like I really didn't want to play it any more.
Mass Effect 2 on the other hand I still need to complete and It's an awesome game. My trouble is that if I'm going to play an RPG I really need to put some time in to it, whereas COD/FIFA I can get roll up get on line for an hour and be done with it.

I know what you mean. I've been playing FNV a bit, and the missus is starting to get annoyed with me, where as like you say Fifa / Cod etc you can sneak in a few games.
