  • And?? For about the 8th time, helmets don't save lives

I think making those sort of comments is quite irresponsible. Of course they don't automatically save lives, but there are circumstances (however rare) where wearing a helmet will give you a better chance of not being hurt than not wearing it. There are arguments for or against it, but that sentence is a fallacy.

  • i haven't been on here for a while, and am so ssad that this is the first thread i read. I really feel for everyone involved - may she rest in peace.

  • i hate reading these threads :( thoughts to friends and families. RIP

    another time, another topic.

  • I am Anish - husband of Catriona Patel. She was killed at the Oval on 29th June. I am keen to be involved. In fact 2 weeks after Cat was killed, I had a very random meeting - bumped into Boris Johnson, Lord Adonis and all of the senior folk at TFL. I have since met with TFL to talk through ideas and am keen to continue working to make cycling safer for all in London. I am in!! Depending on how many people come together to meet next week - I may be able to arrange a venue at my office.

This is so sad. I know what the family of this latest 'statistic' is going through. It breaks your life apart. We need to do something.

  • Tragic. My deepest sympathies.

  • Heartfelt sympathies to family and friends.

Ride Safe, lets all take it easy out there.

  • Ktee, I'm in. I'm free on Tuesday, so that's ideal for me. If it changes to Wednesday, I'll try to book that day off.

acyclist, glad you are able to be part of this. My condolences to you and your whole family.

  • That is so SAD! RIP!!!

  • RIP, another very sad day.

this has been passed on to

also I added it too bike radar road and found it in commuting forum.

  • cant make it down tonite, worth mentioning inner dublin where all hgv trucks are banned

Wasn't an HGV, 7.5 tonner driven on a regular car licence, no additional training required.

  • Really sad to hear. Sorry for your loss, thoughts go out to the family and friends.

    RIP :(

  • My heart gose out to the lorry driver and his/hers family

    also to the cyclists family.

  • Gutted to hear another has been struck down in his/(and increasingly)her prime. I cannot imagine the pain her loved ones must be going through. Just terrible. What words can you offer in such circumstances? I just hope that the show of support in this thread helps in some small way. To hear about the Pownders road incident just makes me more glum. I hope the Angels up there ride fixed, but I suspect they prefer Dutch bikes.

Hope the LCC keeps up the god work, IMO we should all support them. Their idea re Bike Tube and led rides for novices are sound ideas, but I guess that's another thread too.

  • Horrible news. Thoughts go out to family and friends.

  • i write to my mp re road safety every time it happens.

i am gonna post the link here in a minute.

if everyone on the forum writes to their mp i am sure they will push it up the political agenda.

+1, politicians do listen if you take the time to tell them. Whether they act is another matter but it is always worth bending their ear.

  • here goes...

    http://www.parliament.uk/commons/

enter your postcode and it brings up your mp.

you can use the link to send an email.

    good luck with it all.

  • lcc and ctc regularly raise road safety with the olympics people but they are not that receptive to our concerns.

if we can push it up the political agenda these sort of planners may have to change their tune etc.

  • go on write to your mp. lets see if we can get some momentum going.

after a about two weeks i usually get a reply on house of commons notepaper.

cross reference the james martin incident we have seen what can be acheived if people write in / complain.

keep your message short and simple.

  • i have just seen the action group meeting thread.

looks like we got some momentum already.

    nice one.

  • First time I've read this thread.
TBH every time I see a 'rider down' post I can't bear to look in case of a fatality.
I just don't know what to say.
It's incredibly upsetting and I wish for something good to come from this.
    I'm sure it will.

Condolences to all the family and friends concerned.

Ride safe, spread the cycling safety love, and make time for those riders who lack confidence and experience and just need a helping word or two.

  • I spoke to thelondonpaper yesterday & they have run a piece on this today (the final edition of tlp)

I thought I would make you aware of it before the who the f**k is this Mike fella who says he is representing the forum starts. I really didn't expect a direct quote let alone this.

**AN EIGHTH cyclist this year has died in the capital after colliding with a lorry, prompting calls for a road safety campaign. Crystal Brown, 26, was hit on Wednesday morning at a junction on Whitechapel Road and died later in hospital. Police said that she had recently moved to Hackney. A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: “It looks like she and the lorry were going to turn left. The back of the lorry clipped her and she has been dragged under.”

Cyclists have expressed anger on internet forums at the number of cyclists killed by lorries, especially when turning left. A meeting is planned next week to discuss ways of making roads safer. Mike R**, of the London Fixed-Gear and Single-Speed forum, said: “Some solutions can be quite cheap and simple . We need to tell people not to go between the left of lorries and the pavement at traffic lights. “Several cyclists have been killed in this way .”

  • splendid work Mike. now i am off to get drunk
