  • That Merckx bike is pretty cool.

  • Anyone know anything about the MM riser-fixie 201? It's sold by evans, but I can't seem to find ANYTHING about them on-line, which is a bit worrying. Anyone know who makes them or what they're like?

    Thanks!

I actually don't mind these. Not too expensive. Does anyone know what these are actually like? (besides the paintjob)

Look at the full spec: Novatec, Tektro, Maxxis, Jetset etc. tells you it's a generic Taiwan product, unlikely to be any better or worse than any other cookie-cutter product. For an extra tenner, you can have a 2009 Kona Paddy Wagon, which makes the no-brand thing look overpriced.

  • £469...

  • Zed - is that the same frame that we saw at the World Cup?

Yes kind of. The paintjob is the same. Whether it's actually the same geo and build quality of the model the Belgians ride is another matter.

It's the Iljo Keisse model, but looking at the bike he rides, it looks slightly different.

750 euro for frame and fork.

  • Put a tube in a mould of the shape you want it to distort it into then force a hydraulic fluid inside the tube making it expand into the mould.

    Yes, that's the theory.
And the way Giant does it (sometimes).
But after this "technology" became a marketing name, they used it for all kinds of deformation.
Hit a tube with a hammer, clamp it in a vice, slam a solid piece of metal into the end of a tube and call it hydroforming.

I know something about it; it's ugly.

  • I still think these are pretty tasty - wonder if they will sell frameset only

  • Do you know what tubeset they use on those VV?

  • Looks like on-one have started to sell the Il pompino as a kind of OTP.
But you get to customize it on the site!

No - though i know that Pinarello builds the Merckx range of bikes

  • No - though i know that Pinarello builds the Merckx range of bikes

Are you sure? Pinarello frames are built in the far east these days, like the majority of the world's frames.

Merckx has never had a commercial relationship with Pinarello to the best of my knowledge, nor did he ever ride one of their frames. He did ride frames made by Ernesto Colnago and Ugo De Rosa and it was the latter who helped set up his frame building business.

  • I think the Merckx and Pinarello carbon frames are same, I read somewhere recently that they share a factory with a third 'un-named' company. The custom/bespoke Merckx frames are still made in Meise, but everything else is farmed out.

  • Yup - the modern Merckx frames, since they relaunched 2/3 years ago, are built by Pinarello

  • Thanks. What that means is Pinarello are outsourcing production to Taiwan yet still persisting with their 'made in Italy' nonsense because the frames are painted and assembled in Treviso. It's the way of the world I guess, but I still think they should be a little bit more honest about it.

  • i understand Casati aren't much better - perhaps you should rethink your avatar!

  • I can't find the article, but for some reason I'm pretty sure I remember reading that the carbon factory is in Europe, which I thought was odd. Not that it makes much difference, but andyp's point still remains...

edit - found it, the Merckx/Pinarello 'carbon manufacture facility' is in Italy.

  • Casati are a lot better. One model from their range is made elsewhere, everything else is made by hand by them. I've visited both the Casati and Pinarello factories and one is clearly a bike manufacturer, the other a painting and assemby shop.

  • question.
Leader frames. are they any good?

  • Good for the price - Leader as a brand is slated quite a lot on here, but they are good quality for what you pay.

  • Does anyone know if Evans etc have a January sale? I'm thinking it might be better to hold out until then to buy something new.

  • They always do, starts in January I think

  • Bear in mind that the best deals will be on 2009 models, which are already reduced to clear and there may not be any left by January. If something is unchanged apart from paint for 2010, it would be better to get 30% off the 2009 price now than to wait a month and get 10% off the 2010 price.
