  • Bullshit turnout from the rest of Brighton polo though...

  • So....

The five of us who made it to Shoreham had a great time on the court.

It's not too slippy and is a great size. Really nice and big, meaning long smooth passes and big breaks and chases. I thought it was slightly too big, but is definitely in keeping with the way things are going. The lights are really good and the boards are just about high enough, with padding on the top so checking could be fun. It would need a bit of work to make it ideal, one side has protruding pillars every two metres and there are big gaps which act as entrances for the roller girls which would need closing up.

The guys are really friendly, one of the staff jumped on his bike to make up teams and they said that we could stored extra boards/goals there. They even offered to knock up some goals for us!

The only problem is that they are not desperate for our money. Their Wednesday roller disco makes them hundreds of quid and there's no way we can compete with that and negotiation on price isn't going to happen unless they really need us to fill slots (not a prolem atm!).

At 40 quid an hour, it's not going to be a regular fixture, but if we can find a slot which would otherwise be empty, or some way of filling slots at short notice, it would be a great asset.

It also made us realise how much scope there is for finding a similar space ourselves. If we can find someone who is paying through the nose on business rates on a property with a suitable floor, we can offer to occupy it and save them a bomb.

  • Oh and most people have done the Doodle, it shows what we already knew. Wednesdays and Sundays are our only viable days.

  • Really good fun playing on a court that size, shame more people couldn't of experienced it. I think that everyone played a little better than they usually do. It was Preston Park polo amplified. In my opinion peoples strengths and weaknesses were more visible on the larger court. It was a different game for me than our usual knock about, more intense, more passing, a lot more sprinting which is something that just doesn't happen at Preston Park and is really fun. Generally more satisfying when something works like a sweet pass or thundershot, or a goal that had been taken from one end to the other, round a couple players and into the goal. The court at first seemed quite big and a little slippery to me, but after a couple of games it felt spot on. Over the coming months when it's possible that we wont have sorted out an indoor space or even a lit outdoor space, it's too dark, wet or cold to play on Sundays and Wednesday, i would be up for spending that little bit more to satisfy my addiction to this silly game, even if it was only 6 of us for 2 hours once a month or something. x

  • So bummed I couldn't make it. Sounds like you guys had blast. How much did end up being for the "introduction price" ?

  • We paid £30 for the session. Alot less than the normal rate.

  • is that something that can be maintained? because that is pretty sweet.

  • No. :(

  • As above, gutted I missed this, really gutted. But unavoidable work commitments and all that. I would love it if we did another session. If you can get the price scales Tim maybe we can see when we can afford to play there next.

Also, I am joining the SPD gang, sunday is going to be hop-tastic

  • They said it'll normally be £40 an hour.

Also, the small court is too small.

    Duh! slaps forehead.

  • I saw someone on freecycle asking for indoor or flood lit practice space for artistic cycling. I sent them an email saying that we were after the same thing and that we might be able to join forces for more leverage with a landlord. I haven't had a reply yet.
