Apart from the obvious "Glossy Photos" and "Beth Ditto" threads I'm not 100% aware of any real sexism on the forum. As Greasy said, the girls that are on here, however few, and doing great things, for the forum and cycling in general.
The problem in my eyes is that we have become swamped by Purile Nonsence, a la DMC's post about the repeted questions and inane crap. (maybe we need to revise the Nursery and highlight the UTFS function and that most question have already been answered)
Don't get me wrong, the humor was one of the first things I enjoyed about this place, before I got involved with the 'Real World' side of it.I hate the way that it's all getting too angry. No one can voice an opinion without a fight breaking out. It's always going to be male dominated, cycling has been from it's conception, but the more equal it gets the better.
I get your point Fred, and totally agree, but I'm also in agreement that it's maybe not our place to point it out 'on behalf' of the female members.
It seems that the Forum is reaching a turning point. Lots of original members are not contributing anymore due to the amount of bullshit, and we are getting hundreds of new members every week wanting to learn and get involved.
Anyone who cares about the Forum and the community that has developed because of it should do their best to keep it a classy, fun and informative place.
And while the weather is this good we should ALL be out riding!

^^The forum's been 'reaching a turning point' about once a month for the last 2 years - at each juncture where another batch of members enter their disenchanted-with-the-forum phase, which then comes and goes as each new wave of newbies goes through the same stages of cyber-social devélopment.

I blame rep. If only we got rid of rep then all the childish ''humour' and point-scoring would stop, the forum would be a nicer place and people would talk about bikes more and not derail threads so much. I also blame newbies. And embittered old timers.

has anyone else ever thought that referring to someone as 'sanctimonious' is, in itself, sanctimonious?

Scarlett & birthday boy summed it up nicely.
The friends you make on here go further/deeper than the few pages of HTML the forum is - that's where the value is.
Now back to the list

- Hugh Hefner
- Heather Mills
- Lady Gaga (not sexist)
- Boutros boutros Ghali

Smell the (rancid cycling) mitt
is that sexy?
I have introduced people to the forum and not wishing to offend anyones discriminatory sensibilities a couple have been women. (does that make me sexist for making the distinction?)
one was offended by the generally off key sense of humour but not by sexism
the other has joined in here fully and actually gave me a t shirt with "I'm a cunt" on it. I have received more compliments from women than men whilst wearing that tshirt.
Not really sure what I am trying to say here, perhaps it's that we all have our individual sensitivities and it's nearly impossible to 2nd guess what will offend people.
I can think of moments where genuine sexism and racism have been jumped on (eg Paul michel).

To be perfectly honest I think this place has been really good lately. look at the current posts and there's plenty of substantial bike stuff. I regulate myself and do not need anyone telling me what I should and shouldn't say. I'm well aware of when the line is crossed. Thanks. Having said that, I am aware that things get misconstrued and that things get carried away sometimes, so I apologise if anything I have ever said has come across as sexist. It was never intended. Maybe if people spent less time whining or trying to win pointless arguments and more time contributing then maybe that would make things better...
Let's not have this place turn into the tedious, apologetic, lowest common denominator pish that seems to have invaded every other aspect of public life.
Scott, I see you mentioned people comparing their girlfriends to girls in stupid pictures and I assume that was aimed at me. I'm not sure why you deem that to be so pathetic; it was just a daft observation derived from my missing someone that lives 200 miles away. Please get over it.
And while I'm having my say, it should be noted that while GA2G comes out with a lot of shit (no offense pal), his heart is clearly in the right really and anyone with half a brain knows that. Also, he has compiled dozens of really helpful lists that help actually help newcomers and are a thousand times more useful than endless smartarsed, big-fish-in-a-small-pond, UTFS type comments.

Scott: how can something in M&M be "irrelevant"? It's the M&M thread. Anyone can start a thread there about anything, that's the point of it then it's up to other members whether or not they find it interesting or funny and respond to it. "Childish" again is a value judgement we all make for ourselves. Unless it's specifically a sexist thread that someone has started I don't see the connection, I don't see that the M&M section is a problem. I'm not assuming you were talking about threads I've started either (though if you were feel free to tell me). Childish and peurile is one thing, attitudes towards women (and gays I might add though a lot less fuss is made about the frequent and casual homophobia on here) is another. Though admittedly the misogyny and homophobia are often expressed in childish or peurile ways.
