  • I once got oil all over my eyeball putting a chain back on. The surface went all weird and ripply, but after a couple of weeks it went back to normal.

    How did you manage that?

  • How did you manage that?

I think something blew into my eye and I forgot I had oily fingers. It's not a very edifying tale in general.

  • I did this a month ago, and required stitches all good now though.

And you didn't start a thread about it and ask for our expert opinion? You've no fucking clue how this place works have you?

  • Sorry, I'll try harder next year.

  • servicing my bike last night and got my finger sucked into my drivechain between the rear cog and chain, its usually the one thing im really careful about. Its cracked the nail and stabbed through abit of flesh, im worried the oil will make it infected and i ndont really wanna go to hospital if i can avoid it, anyone else done this and did it heal its self ok?

how do people manage to do this? Seems to be a really common injury

  • there's some pictures on Sheldon's site of what can happen if you're really not careful. Happened to me, but luckily healed OK. Would've been quicker if I'd gone to get some stitches, though.

Did this a month ago. Tooth of cog went most of the way though my thumb, right on the side of the nail. healed up nicely though. Wether or not it gets infected will be very apparent soon I would imagine.

Happened to me on my GT single speed. Hurt like fuckery but healed OK

You lot should take more care. Oh, and don't try using any powered tools, they can hurt you as well.

  • Yeah, it happened to me too quite few times. I think the last time around 1982. It was roughly the same time I fall of the tree and had to go to the school nurse.

  • Good friend of mine is a car mechanic, always wears latex gloves.

I thought it was because he wanted to keep his hands clean- turns out that working on cars (and I presume other mechanical things) the oil contains many very fine metal particles which being suspended in oil facilitates their transfer through the skin into the bloodstream.

This is a bad thing apparently, hence the gloves.

Now like everyone I would like to have the powers of Magneto, but I am unsure that filling myself with metal fillings then wrapping myself in copper and plugging into the national grid is the best way to achieve this.

  • I'll go back to jumping into "black" military test zones etc.

Quite a few times? I've been riding and maintaining bicycled for 40 years, and I have never managed an attempt to slice my finger off with my chain. Is it me that's doing something wrong?

  • Yes, clearly

  • Sorry

  • Good friend of mine is a car mechanic, always wears latex gloves.

I though it's because of the skin conditions like eczema etc.

  • It's always a good idea to wear rubber gloves when doing any kind of car/bike maintenance, for the above reasons and the fact that it's a pain in the arse getting all the oil off your hands.

I, of course never wear gloves, so don't listen to me.

Was doing too many things at once and wasn't concentrating. Will be more careful in future.

You know, when you're a school boy you tend to put your finger in some strange places. And after again to check, if it was just one off or the effect is the same :-)

  • Ste, show us at sunday polo... Should be fine, your immune system should deal with the dirt so don't worry bout that too much (cavemen didn't have savlon and they were ok, to a point)....

  • To the OP- you will be fine, if it is a big enough cut get it stitched, if not I really would not worry.

Yeah, their life expectancy was about 25 years

When I was a schoolboy, I put my finger in many places. Some of them turned out to be painful, others pleasurable. It's the painful ones that I've managed to stay clear of.

  • You were clearly a fast learner then :-) We tend to forget those painful mistakes to quickly

  • could have been worse,it could of been my finger ;-)
