That's rad!
If you're after doom I'd probably change to 13 gauge strings (you'll want a guitar tech to set it up as the nut will probably need to be filed and the tremolo will need to be adjusted).
Then tune it to C standard and get a sick fuzz.
To be honest though if you want to get straight in to it I'd recommend something like a Boss Katana amplifier, you'll be able to dial in a pretty great tone with that and experiment with all sorts of effects without having to buy a bunch of different gear!

Snap.

That's the plan, in like 6 months to a year when I can actually play the thing again. I was never that good 15 years ago so it's going to be painful.

I'm always on the lookout for a cheapie OG Kramer Baretta, what you after?

Not sure about Doom specific beginner resources but the best balance of beginner friendly and interestingly varied content i've found is Anyone Can Play Guitar. Probably more indie schmindie than you want but def worth checking out.

Yes! Anything by Kramer with a single pickup and a lairy paintjob.

Jason from Fuzzlord Effects does lots of practical doom beginner stuff on youtube and on his Fuzz Life podcast - setting up a downtuned guitar, fuzz pedals with buffers etc.

I'll check it out, thanks.

My better half has agreed to "us" buying me an amp for my birthday and Christmas. It's us because we're currently single income family with young kids so it's hard to justify treating yourself to frivolous things like guitar amps when it's only my salary keeping us in rent, nappies and My Little Pony Magazines.
Anyway, she's was sold by my argument that after four years of hard budgeting and every Christmas and birthday being about buying each other practical stuff like boots or coats, it's time be loosen the purse strings a bit and treated ourselves to some frivolous shit that makes us happy.
Now let the shopping begin in anger. *rubs thighs

Very easily get loud with old Peavey, Sunn or Acoustic Control Corp solid state amps. And they’re fairly reliable. Unfortunately they’re also getting more expensive.
I’ve been using a secondhand 70’s Acoustic 470 solid state amp for bass (not doom, but loud stuff) for 10 years or so with no issues.
Here’s my shameless self-promotion:

Two piece, instrumental bass and drums. I played a Kramer 450b aluminium neck bass into the Acoustic and two EV TL606 15” speaker cabs. Pedals used were a Tronographic Rusty Box, Boss bass overdrive, Boss DD5 digital delay, MXR Distortion+ and a custom Rat clone.

Treacle matey. Tweed Durex? Sweet cleans and some dutty rock?
Love that 5e3 sound these days.

Oh man now i'm deep in option anxiety and have started looking at loads of other stuff.
I expect your second guitar to be a boat anchor Les Paul Custom tuned to C running 13 gauge strings... Welcome to the club and say goodbye to all your disposable income... 🤘
