  • So... after much dawdling I've decided to finally bite the bullet and buy a baritone.

I had done the deal on an S-Works Allez frameset and the fecker sold it to one of his club pals before I could collect it so rather than starting another build I've decided to redirect that moolah into music kit.

Gretsch G5265 is the likely choice at the moment.
Danelectro '56 is also a contender although I feel like the Gretsch might have a bit more clarity...

Any other considerations I'm not thinking of? Really really keen on Supro Hampton baritone but I'm concerned the short scale length won't be what I want...

  • No advice to offer but bigups on your choice. I've been umming and aahing for years about picking one of those up. Beautiful looking things.

  • Thanks! I've now snookered myself into a corner where I just can't decide if the Danelectro or the Gretsch is the better choice for me? I like the looks of both and the price difference is fairly negligible so it's coming down to sound and playability and I can't try out either one...

Someone decide for me please :(

  • Get both then send one back?

  • I don't know if anyone has any experience of the Danelectros at that price point but I know I wasn't impressed by the pickups on my budget Gretsch - sounded very gritty to my ears, not anywhere near what I expect a Gretsch to sound like. May be something minimised by the deeper sound of a baritone, but it's the only advice I've got. Plus, Japanese rock guy.

  • I think I'm actually leaning towards the Danelectro, the only thing I've been worrying about is the Danelectro build quality/ whether it might feel like crap to play.

Worst case scenario I have a guy who can fabricate me a new bridge for it and I can replace the tuners so there's no reason for it to have tuning issues I suppose?

    Edit:

Danelectro 56 Baritone in Sparkle Black (older model w/ 3+3 "Bell" headstock) is on the way from Thomann.de which was the only place I could find a bell headstock one (not overly keen on the "Dolphin" headstock version). Would have preferred a plain black one but there was a nine week back order on it and it won't be a big deal to give it a respray if I can't cope with the sparkle finish (looks quite nice anyway).

Have also finally found a TC Electronic RS212 cab for sale in Ireland for reasonable money so picking that up next week. I'm excited to have my favourite amp setup back together (albeit downsized).

  • Not sure if you can still get them but I have a telecaster blacktop baritone in sunburst and it’s awesome. In my old band I primarily used it for fuzzy Kyuss style chugging through a bass amp which it did really well. Sadly I’m ampless these days but it’s my go to sofa guitar now, it’s just really nice to play.

  • Spent some time A/Bing a 330 and a 335 on Sat. Both strong contenders, but the sheer amount of feedback from the 330 I was getting against the "feedback when I want it" from the 335 swung it in that direction. I'll be switching the HBs for a pair of P90s as well, so best of both worlds there.

Maybe I'll get a cherry 330 in a couple of years too and just switch them in and out of the case, so my wife doesn't entirely realise I've got two.

  • Nice work dudes. Well jeal about both purchases.

I'm chasing down a new job at the moment and am hopeful that if it comes off will give me back some disposable income to start wasting on guitars, bikes and records again. *fingers crossed

  • where is the best place to sell a guitar?
1981 Japan made Takamine acoustic. Plays lovely.
But I am poor (and now kinda want a baritone danelectro)

  • £?

  • looking for £300. Is nice. Sunburst finish.
    Hard and soft cases.

  • Could try Reverb but I'm always skeptical as a buyer how much you're paying for all that hip additional content. eBay's got to be your best bet I'd have thought.

  • I've bought and sold on both reverb and ebay, both have merit for sure, but only when there is an offer on of course.

  • squier jazzmaster baritone is nice but i personally would choose the danelectro, regularly sell for around £200 and danos are generally ace.
I have a bass VI but would like a baritone too so maybe at christmas

  • Was going to chip in that the lightweight cardboardy feel of Dano's in a big part of the charm. As long as you don't expect it to play like a PRS you won't be disappointed. Love my Dano bass.

  • I've pulled the trigger on a new Dano just because I was kind of fussy on exact spec and couldn't get the one I wanted exactly anywhere else but I'm pleased with the choice, I think the lipsticks are going to be a lot more me then the mini-humbuckers would have been (I hope).

Plan is to see how I get on with baritone and if it really is the missing link in guitar/ bass playing I've always wanted.

If it turns out to be the great success I hope it will be I might start looking into either a custom build (not Fender) Telemaster Baritone...

    or a Millimetric MGBS3

... both of which I have a huge crush on at the moment...

  • Yeah, much as I love my PRS(s) I can't see myself likely buying any more in the future. I've gotten to a stage where I can justify spending money on nice bikes but not really so much on nice guitars anymore so anything over €1,800-2,000 just isn't in my line of vision anymore (not to say that that's a cheap guitar but it's not flashy PRS money).

Also would rather bolster the pedalboard a bit more moreso than buying "luxury" guitars.

  • I got an insane deal - £900 off the 335 from RRP (insane RRP pricing that it was to start). Then sold my Rick for way more than I though it'd go for, so ended up paying 2/3 less than RRP really.

Not touched the Rickenbacker more than a handful of times in the last 6 years and never really got on with it anyway, so time for it to depart.

  • i was so close to bagging a millimetric when the show was on in berlin but missed out by a whisker. never mind - I would be very skint if i had managed it anyway
    T

  • They're absolutely incredible looking guitars aren't they!! I must keep an eye out for when they're at another show over this side of the world and try one!

  • They are stocked in the UK since that show - james at the home of tone has one or maybe two I think - my plans are on hold for the mo anyway, next guitar on the list for me is the opposite to a baritone... (will reveal later if I get the one I want)
