  • Cabronita just arrived!

I now see quite clearly the issue that @thross mentioned. Really poor string/pole alignment, especially noticeable at the bridge pickup. Of course...I had already ordered the replacements as I knew I wouldn't be able to live with it.

That said, the guitar is lovely and a massive step up from my Tele copy. It's so solid and well built, it's crazy. Gonna take some getting used to I reckon. The finish on the neck is a bit er, sticky, feels quite hard to move my hand around. Is that something I can rectify?

  • Oh man that is waaay out!!

Could just need a good clean or you could try very carefully sanding the back of the neck https://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Sanding_Your_Guitar_Neck_for_a_Smoother_Feel

  • Yeah, it's bonkers out. Glad I didn't pay too much for it. I can't detect any difference in volume but the pickups are currently heavily canted towards the treble end. I am going to replace the bridge after my new screwdriver set arrives. I will probably have to mess with the pickup heights after that anyway.

Sanding and oiling it would be so nice but I'm scared...

  • "Extended-range" bass.
    Or...
Do I really need 6 strings or will 5 do?

I currently only have a 4-string fretless Jazz and I want to get another bass, something fretted with more than 4 strings.
I don't really want something massively long with a heap of frets, it's to have something more chordy for bass as a lead instrument so really it's going to be more like a big guitar for me.

Options are more limited for 6-string and I'd like to avoid anything that's overwhelmingly "metal" or "r&b" so that's most of the Yamaha's and Ibanez's and the like out of the running.
I have been admiring the Ibanez AGB-205 Artcore hollowbody 5- string...

    5-string or 6-string?
    Any recommendations?

  • if you own anything more than 4 strings you are required by law to play sitting on a stool.

    don't do it.

tho if you must - go Spector Euro LX5.

  • Nothing wrong with a stool... and a foot stool... and a turtle neck sweater...

To be honest I'd rather something that looked more like a hollowbody or one of the Fender-esque shapes rather than a woodworkers sextoy. (Fodera-style singlecuts aside)

  • I cannot help you with your lead bass guitar problem. Sorry.

I need to stop watching pedal videos on my commute. It's giving me gearlust again just when I need to be getting content with what I have. As of this morning I am now convinced I cannot live without a £700 tape echo.

  • Thank fuck for that.

Foley is an incredible bassist. Do people in London only play folk and surf nowadays?

  • I used to be in a band with a widdly bass player. We put out a 7" single in the mid 00's and one review slated it for having a bass solo. I had no idea until I read it then I couldn't un-hear it.

  • Calypso is the new nu-folk

  • I'm so far behind trend :'(

This also. I'd sell a kidney for a Fodera Anthony Jackson Presentation II.

  • what's the worst thing about bass solos?

    when they stop.

because that's when the drum solo starts.

  • I feel that my taste in music is like a stopped clock and was accidentally briefly "on trend" for a couple of years there. It was really fucking disconcerting and to be honest, made my continuing failure to thrive professionally even harder to bear than when I was clearly out of step with the zeitgeist.

I'm starting to notice more of a shift away from the prevailing folk-pop stomp/clap/plinkyplonk nonsense that has held sway for fucking ever now and it feels like a blessed relief.

  • Still kicking myself for not buying a Watkins Copycat when they could be had for pennies, not that long ago either... My drummer even had one!!!

  • The Anthony Jackson models are particularly heart-stopping in price... I think they're somewhere in the $25,000 ballpark. There's something kind of rad about a $25k bass with one pickup and no controls though.

  • let me know when you hit a doom / stoner / krautrock jag. i have a few ideas.

  • My drummer

i love the way drummers are treated like possessions. bloody right too.

  • oof i think you're on your own here, mate.
