He's a total sixties kid... Couple of beautiful old 60s Hagstroms, couple of Voxes, Selmer Zodiac, etc... Great 60s Pacific Northwest style guitar player, raunchy as you like... His band was called The Sires and he played in a few of the Toe Rag bands as well...
The mandolin is kind of a cross between a Mandocaster and a Vox Teardrop, it's beautiful... Single lipstick pickup, it wails! Pix when I get it back... 🙂

I'm really out of the loop, what's cheap modelling hardware like these days? I'm currently playing straight into my computer which sounds surprisingly good with the built-in amp models in Cubase but then you'd expect that with the ~£4k of interface/speakers/PC/software involved.
I suppose I could just turn my amp on and leave the pedals set up but I'm a bit low on space at the moment.

I've been playing a SquierMini through an iRig HD into Logic and it sounds great for a portable travelling setup, or GarageBand if you wanna go even cheaper...

I suppose what I'm really after is a stand-alone POD type thing but I remember them sounding pretty bad 10+ years ago. That looks interesting into a phone though, will check out some demos later, thanks!

Studio LPs have a fair few fans but a dealer would say a poor refin takes 40-50% off the value while a neck break, even well fixed, could be -20/25%. By that reckoning a £500 Studio could be worth as little as £125-150 and I bet the owner's expectations are higher than that...

My first 'proper' guitar was a late 90s studio LP in wine red, got it brand new at the time for around £700. The 90s ones are supposed to be among the more highly regarded studios but don't think even they sell second hand for more than £500 in decent condition.
Don't know what the newer ones are like but neck break and poor refinish puts it around £200 max for me. Bet you could get one in decent condition for £300-£400 if you're patient...

fair enough, I guess you can only decide the value of the sparkly one by playing it...if the neck fix is good and it sounds nice £250 / £300 might be ok, could be junk though.

Was it fixed by a luthier or a home done job? There's loads of information on the internet about how to do it, and it's easy enough that loads of people give it a crack themselves. I'm sure most do a fine job, but I don't think I'd buy a guitar that someone had glued back together on their kitchen counter.

I would avoid it, sounds well sus...
PS Here's a pic of the mandolin that's currently being fixed up...

You can pick up an electric drum kit for under £250 on Gumtree. Pain to store if he doesn't hae much room but if he does, that's a decent pressie.

He had and sold an electric kit. He's got a nice old 60s Olympic (?) kit blue sparkle but pretty sure his snare is shitty. Anyone know anything about good value vintage snares?

I've got a Ludwig Supraphonic, wooden shell, love it. I had a gorgeous Yamaha for a while too, copper shell, extremely good value for that kind of money (s/h). Gretsch are well rated, played a few, never owned.

One day when I am rich and powerful I am going to have a soundproofed, wooden floored room, with fabric on the wall and a Gretsch sparkle kit in it and the biggest dull ride you've ever seen. Oh mother glory.
