  • Er...

    Gibson semis, Gretsches, FENDER THINLINES!!!

  • your a gibson semi.

  • Also, an friend/acquaintance of mine just posted this on facebook. He transcribed it as part of his dissertation on Trout Mask Replica apparently. Mental.

  • Anybody know where I can get some of these Gibson small jazz picks? I'm down to my last few, and I can't seem to find them without crazy prices...

  • ^^Man I can't watch "that pedal show". Those guys do my head in. They are so fucking slow. They dither and pause and repeat themselves and talk and waffle and in-joke and faff and pause and errrrr and dead air. Just play the fucking thing dudes.

  • That's great!

I know what you mean about the pedal show guys, it's a guilty pleasure for me... They're totally a couple of squares...

  • ^^^Rhodri's a fucken dude actually. Met him doing a wedding gig (at the Royal Restival Hall if you please) when I was cuddly singer-songwriter dinner jazz warm-up for his TV Theme tune cover band, Dream Themes (who are the surviving members of the Oh Blimey Big Band of Frank Sidebottom infamy). When I arrived they were filming an episode of their home-made soap, Thamesmeerd in the dressing room. My facebook timeline has been immeasurably cheeried up by knowing them.

  • Tonight's rig... Only had the A cab plugged in, cuz I don't know how to wire a stack up... And I'd already had a couple of drinks so didn't wanna kill my amp... 100℅ fail...

Sounded great anyway, next Friday night we take it all the way...

  • I was going to learn this on bass over Christmas, but didn't get too far...

  • In other news... Was supposed to be launching an LP I played guitar on on RSD... Can't fucking stand the idea of being on the same stage as the drummer so I just pulled out...

    Principles are a bitch... 😭😐

  • He's such a great player, I've tried working out a few of his bits before - makes it sound so simple yet when you go to play it you realise the patterns he's playing are all over the place with little repetition!

  • yeah but, aks him to play the same thing twice, note for note.

  • ^^bummer man. Could be worse. Could have been this guy on bass:

  • The electrics on my old bass have been playing up so decided to junk all the Japanese bits and go US. My soldering's shit though, so interwebz to the rescue: custom loom with CTS pots/jack, a NOS Sprague Pacer cap and a well canny solderless connector for less than a tenner more than it'd cost me for the parts. I could never do it as well as this. Chuffed…

  • Nice, how does it sound?

  • Dunno yet, need to enlarge the scratchplate holes for US pots, so waiting for a cheapo reamer from th' bay to do it properly. Got new knobs too. Had to force myself not to order Rutters ones from the States for $50...

Great to see the Solton being used4punkrox!

  • Mate, the Les Paul sounds fucking vicious through that and the A cab... It's almost too awesome...

I've been looking around at fully loaded Strat pickguards, quite into the idea of just dropping a new one in... The electrics on the Tokai are total pish... The Brierley P90 on the TV Junior completely transformed it... Tho', interestingly, my Mosrite clone sounds even better... Same pickup but much denser mahogany body... Spoilt for choice in the P90 department atm... 🙂

  • I replaced all the switches, and the scratch and switch plates on my old Korean Squier fret less Jazz bass with Fender USA ones and it sounded fantastic afterwards. And looks a whole lot better, due to the higher quality

  • I want a new bass I think. Something thuddy.

  • EB Music Man.

  • Get a Dano Longhorn, so much fun and great for recording... I ADORE mine!

  • Nice. I do like a Dano. Will keep an eye on Gumtree.

Back in acoustic bumpkin-land (that may have to be the new name of my new home studio), I've been teaching myself some new finger-picking patterns after realizing that my handful of go-to things are starting to sound really stale. I dug out an old book of Nick Drake songs I bought years ago and am working on Hazy Jane I which sounds great. Really weird tuning, it's CGCFCE I think. Instant Drakey loveliness.

I've also been on a massive Townes Van Zandt bender recently and have been learning loads of tunes. His finger picking is so simple but so funky. He manages to make simple patterns really drive along. I love the way he moves his shoulders once he settles into a menacing groove in that Heartworn Highway footage.

Most of those songs (the way he plays them on Live at the Old Quarter and Heartworn Highway anyway) are a straight outside/inside pattern with a hammered on third. I've had to work hard to avoid the temptation to add the slightly bouncier Travispicky things my muscle memory wants me to do. It’s really weird the way the vibe changes with the slightest shift in timing or emphasis. He seems to really de-emphasise the 1 and hit the 3 hard. Thinking about it now, that may be a lot to do with what gives it such a back-beat vibe. Hmmm.

The other thing I've noticed he does is tends to stick to just four strings, hardly ever adding the high e string when playing an open c chord shape. And when he goes up to an F shape he only plays the top 4 strings which is really anathema to me as I tend to always tray and make any voicing as thick as possible. It's really weird that the moment you break one of these minimal "rules" it immediately stops sounding like TVZ.

I'm just about getting there but still in the "It all falls apart when I start singing*" stage of getting used to it. As projects go, it’s keeping me out of trouble. Will definitely break out Tecumseh Valley or I’ll Be There in the Morning the next time I play out.

*perhaps this is what my studio really should be called.
