Oh for the heady days of 90s acid jazz...
Mister sausage fingers. But yep with you on the dildo basses as a rule. Bork! That clown ^ has a lot to anser for quite frankly, my mate (and current upright player) bought two five string Warwicks in the early 00s on the back of a teenage muso-crush on Zender and has only just in the last couple of years realised the error of his ways and come over to the p-bass and upright side of the tracks.

Ooh...
Right! I've had a think and I reckon £100 is fair for:
2 x Phillips 6LNOS 6GCs
1 x NOS National 5U4
1 x new Electro Harmonix 12AT7
4 x used JJ 12AX7s (will chuck in a few 12AX7 spares too)Only thing is that will leave you short of 1 x 12AT7 I think. Gimme a shout if you're up for it. Will totally understand if you'd rather get the full kit though. TBH slightly less illustrious poweramp valves and more consistent quality across the lot might make more sense from a day to day useage point of view...

Cheers, Al... I think I'm gonna nab rickster's set of 6L6s and then grab the other tubes wherever I can...
-
• #2480
Don't blame you mate. I think i'll stick the posh bits on the bay and kep the more generic stuff for spares.

OK, Twin nerd-out question...
I use an Ice Cube ll in my Twin which turns the reverb/vibrato tube into an extra gain stage...
I'm gonna be replacing that valve too, what would be best for getting a really pokey post-Twin-crunch sound? ATM it's a bit too creamy/Boogie-ish for my liking, would prefer something a little less refined... ;)
If you haven't seen an Ice Cube before they look like this... It plugs into the reverb socket at the back of the amp...

Unless Rickster can answer this with an air of casual assurance I'm thinking TS has just won the nerd thread.

I just read this thread:

shall I pretend to have known what I was talking about all along now?

Blimey hastily reads gearpage thread as well
Sounds muy lo-tech... does teh Cube really sound better than a period-suitable Twin-gooser pedal eg EH LPB-1, MXR micro amp, DOD 250?

Ah man, I still love Zender's playing - have done since I was about 15... I think he played a few of the tunes on the earlier Jamiroquai albums on P and J basses, but was endorsed by Warwick so didn't use the Fender's live.
Warwicks definitely aren't the basses for me though. I'm happy with my DeArmond, Iceni zootbass fretless 5 (bought 2nd hand, the body was a prototype for a John Giblin signature bass) and my old '70s jap P bass copy. Oh and my upright. Get more gigs on upright than anything else at the mo', but would love to get in a band like this and just let loose with disgusting grooves:

It pretty much turns yer humble Twin into a three stage amp... Ghetto style, like... If you use a splitter box... No jump in volume tho', which would be useful...
Come 'round for a listen when I get her fixed up...

But what do I know... I love Travis Bean Wedges.

Such wow.
I'm not sure they're worth much, according to the links above the Ranger was made in massive quantities, but wherever it's worth, it's certainly worth keeping. The EKO logo has almost disappeared from the headstock and there's a chip on the body, but aside from that it's lovely. Do you still have the one you recorded with?
Yeah I don't think they're worth much, but they seem to have fans, particularly amongst the 70s folk types - few people grabbed me to chat about it at various gigs. I don't have the one I recorded with - it was my flatmate's dad's guitar, and we stoppde living together about a year back - but next record, I'll be snaffling it for sure. Brilliant guitars.

I was going to buy some new strings as my guitar is filthy and plays horribly at the minute but thought, as they are only 6 months old, I'd try cleaning them first.
The internet suggests WD40 but can you use anything else? Linseed oil? Lemon pledge?
Also, how often do people replace their strings? I seem to go through an awful lot, probably because I never clean them...

babywipes?
And wash your hands before playing -

I'm not going to boil my guitar strings.. Sorry

• #2498
Boiling works for bass strings - never done guitar but I assume it's the same.

It's a 1973 Italian EKO Ranger 6
I got two of these! Love them, both battered though. Would like a Ranger 12 one day

I've fallen in love with this...
Pretty cheap at £369, if I buy one I'll get it refinished in Polaris white straight away... Absolutely gorgeous...
Such wow.
