  • Cheers brah, I can't wait to get the damn thing and put it to good use in an inappropriate context. Brilliant.

On a related note, has anyone ever hired out their own workspace and turned it into a rehearsal studio for themselves and their pals? Can't be that hard but I'm buggered if I can find any info on where to hire these mysterious arches/workspaces/general dungholes.

  • Where do people take their guitars for servicing?

The jack socket on my bass occasionally makes a horrible noise when I move & I need someone trustworthy to have a look & possibly re-solder it.

I know about the retail shops on Denmark street but they'll only do instruments bought from them. As close to central as possible would be great...

    Thanks

  • My stock answer is:

Phillipe Dubreille in Angel guitars (above Regent Sound on denmark St. You have to ring the bell and be buzzed up). He'll probably fix it on the spot.

Also the brazillian guy, whose name escapes me, in the basement of Rockers over the road. Both will do quick, quality repairs on anything for cash.

    [/stock answer]

  • ^although it would probably cheaper to buy a cheap soldering iron and do it yourself. It's only 2 wires. You really can't go wrong*

*you can go wrong. but y'know not much to lose from giving it a go.

  • Ok thanks - I'll go & have a look at those places.

Don't fancy doing it myself; I'd like the whole wire replaced and the other end of it (not the jack-socket end) goes into quite a tight area with the active circuitry and I don't want to break it as Warwick parts can be pretty tricky to find.

  • Fair enough. Either of those guys should be able to sort you out.

  • Philipe is awesome... +1

  • Anyone who can make working without a shirt, belly hanging out and rollie in mouth look cool is awesome.

Meanwhile... I've finished three Elvers mixes this weekend. Gonna test drive some on youse lot shortly.

*awaits DFP pontifications on my shortcomings

  • Dooks, did you go for those ADAM's in the end? Thoughts?

I'm maybe thinking about replacing my 8 year old Tannoy Reveal active monitors - was looking at the new KRK Rockit 6's but not sure they are really that much of a step up...

  • Hey. I am going to go for them and was about to press the button on Friday when in a totally uncharacteristic fit of financial responsibility I decided to pay off a chunk of my credit card instead. I will order them in four weeks when I've been paid again and report back then.

Got some nice new plugins for Logic at the wekend though. UA soft tube compressors. Very nice.

  • How you getting on with Logic? I'm still loving Ableton Live for creation, BUT there is just something lacking when I compare my tracks to tracks that have a bit of mastering in other DAW's..........dunno, I might get Logic Pro X and see if I get on with it

By the way, check out Danny J Lewis' music pro tutorials on You Tube (and elsewhere) he is really good and not just dance music, a lot of what he does is transferable

  • Nice one, thanks man. Yeah I'm doing okay I think. It's a steep learning curve, mainly in terms of how to acheive pleasantly musical results as opposed to learning specific tasks, most of which are fairly intuitive or at least easily googleable. I still come across little glitches and bugs I'm not quite sure how to avoid though.

    The first track here:,

The Last Great Auk is the first thing I've done from start to finish in Logic including mastering. This version was actually mixed by a friend in LP9 using some nice outboard. I still have reservations about the mix and will be giving him notes but overall I'm pretty happy with the sound.

  • Quick heads up: I'm probably going to be selling my Laney LC30-II valve amp shortly. I'm just mentioning here to see if there's any interest. It's a cracking amp which has served me well through quite a few gigs. Nice tone for funk, blues and rock and plenty loud enough to use without PA for small gigs.

Let me know if you're interested and want more details. You'll have to pick it up in central(ish) London.

  • IAmNotARobot. I take my guitars to Brinsley Shwarz (ex Graham Parker and the Rumour etc), at Chandlers Guitars in Kew, who gets a lot of business from the Surrey-residing senior rock stars. Very friendly and enthusiastic and explains everything if you want him to, and not overpriced. He only works 2 days a week so you might have to wait to get your baby back.

  • Sp. Brinsley Schwarz.

  • who gets a lot of business from the Surrey-residing senior rock stars.

G'wan freebird drop some names :)

  • Oh, you know, Eric Page and Jimmy Clapton and various members of Pink Sabbath.

  • Howdy. Just put up two new tracks.

    Now free to download.

We're looking for South London Gigs so please feel free to pass onto anyone you think might be interested.

    Lots more songs coming soon.

    Cheers,

  • this made me grin.

  • This should go in the "producers" thread but what the hey: I need to replace those shit monitors I bought because they're shit. Any experienc eof the following gratefully received.

Been looking at Genelec 8030A's which is what two of my friends and collaborators use in pro set ups. They both really rate them and I must say they sound fantastic to me as well. I can't really spend £1000 ish right now though. The next size down the 8020As look a bit too wee though and apparently are a bit bass light. Genelecs reluctantly off the list then.

Adam A7x's were high on the list, possibly even top. But they're over £700 a pair and quite big for my small room. Tempted...

Event 20/20 BAS V3s also briefly considered at a much more palateable £500 a pair... but again they're pretty whopping with 8" drivers and 17kg each. Can't help but suspect that like the KRKs they're primarily aimed at impressive low end and high output electronic music styles. Given that I'm producing almost exclusively acoustic music it they didn't seem quite right.

I've landed on the Adam A5x as being the best for my wallet, style of music and room size. Anyone used them?

Probably a bit late to the party here, but yes the Adams are excellent. I've used both the 5s and 7s and they are very easy to work with. I have the A3xs in my bedroom and they are shockingly good for the price and size, a proper nearfeild.

  • Dooks, did you go for those ADAM's in the end? Thoughts?

I had the reveal actives about 11 years ago when they first appeared. Not so good. Get the Adams and you won't be disappointed.

  • This is possibly more of a general ebay question but as it's (bass) guitar related I thought I'd pop it in here;

Money is a bit tight so I'm looking to raise some money without having to sell either of my nice basses (or bikes) - I've got an Akai Deep Impact SB-1 bass synth pedal in my box of musical toys that I can probably do without as I don't gig that kind of music anymore. When I went on ebay to see how much it might be worth and there's a few on there that have completed for huge amounts! Does a green price next to the item mean it sold for that price? Does anyone know why these pedals are going for substantially more than they cost when new?
