  • 50% off all guitars in-store at Musicroom:

  • Denmark St store not included apparently.

  • Why are all the YouTube tutorials also clickbaity?
Struggling to find someone on there who doesn’t boil my piss within minutes.
Learning my scales at the moment and turns out I even remember the chord sequence for r*pe me by nirvana for some reason!

In other news I just got this back from deep storage at my brothers place. For some reason I assumed I’d sold it at some point when I was flat broke.
He used to play it a bit but reckon it’s been sat stringless for at least a decade 😬

Can someone recommend a guitar tech in east London who could take a look at it? Nut has shrunk/cracked and I know being stringless in a loft for years won’t have done the neck any favours.

  • There's probably people on this thread who could sort that out.

  • Off the top of my head it needs:
    Deep clean
    Neck checked over/truss rod adjusted
    New nut
    Strings, setup and intonation
    Missing scratch plate screw replaced
No idea if the wiring needs a service but it’s original and untouched

It has the weird 22.5” scale neck found on early student model fenders. Need to find appropriate strings as regular ones always felt loose and rattly iirc.

If anyone on here is up for taking a look I’m down.

What've you tried so far? Both JustinGuitar & YourGuitarAcademy can be a bit over-enthusiastic for my liking but the material is pretty great IMO

  • JustinGuitar is the best of the ones I’ve watched so far, it’s early days yet so will stick with it.
The problem usually occurs when random vids start playing after the one you selected and you get some shouty melt showing you ‘the top 10 pro hacks to unlock the fingerboard like a pro’

If there’s a metal for beginners channel that’d be right up my street 😅

Haven't tried it myself, but been working my way through their beginner & intermediate lead courses and they've been pretty decent so far. They've also got a few player-focussed courses too. There's a Dimebag Darrell one there you might be interested in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEQDsbCaSY8&list=PLFcgHQh5q7E6WGnHXC5yTIJs6eaCGhAO0

Again, haven't checked it out, but their Santana & Eddie Van Halen ones seem decent from skimming through them (waiting until I finish the lead courses before jumping into those)

  • Cheers! Will have a look

  • This is cool as fuck

  • Thanks! It’s lovely. Well, it will be once it’s seen a little love.
Don’t feel like I deserve it at this point and still a little overwhelmed at the fact I still own it 😅

I bought it on layaway as a nipper- sent a monthly postal order from my checkout wages all the way to New York each month. Found it online but I was too young to have a card and feel like it was before online shopping was as common as nowadays. Must’ve bought it about 22yrs ago.

  • Just spent a lovely hour talking shop with an old gent called Haim somewhere in the depths of Finchley.
Stunning little workshop and clearly his sanctuary from the world.
He’s excited to give the Swinger its service, describing it as ‘easily the most charming and significant Fender I’ve seen in over 30yrs’.
    Quite a compliment.

  • Love your Swinger! So cool and ever so rare.

I used to have a 63 Duo-Sonic with the 22.5" neck that was a lovely little thing.

  • I had an 80s Japanese reissue duo sonic briefly before I acquired this along with a black on black 78 musicmaster which I gave to a friend about 10yrs ago.
Considering I was shit at guitar as a teen and then gave up I saved hard and bought a couple of really nice things. Glad I kept the best of em.
The student models are wonderful, I really wanted a matching bronco.

  • I sold a lot of my guitar gear a while back but now have some unexpected time to noodle due to injury. Don't want to buy an amp and build up a pedal board so currently looking at combined amp / cab sims and multi-fx. What's cheap and good these days?

Thus far I've looked at the Harley Benton dnafx and headrush mx5. I'm sure there's stuff from zoom but they were pretty awful when I was a kid and learning.

  • I've got both a Zoom G1X Four and G3Xn and honestly think they're pretty great. There is a CPU limit so you can only have 7 effects on the G3 series and 5 on the G1 series (amp and cab sims can take up 2 of those slots). But they're pretty cheap and great value IMO

  • I really like my mustang micro

small and portable, fender amp modelling from the larger GTX and some basic FX (reverb, trem, chorus etc)

I sit in the kitchen and play along with music via it's bluetooth, sometimes it'll be at the end of my pedalboard too

  • It's an incredible guitar! Really looking forward to seeing it restored to its full glory. Good call having it seen by a tech as being without strings for so long can make tensioning strings a bit of a trauma for a guitar that isn't used to it anymore, so will need a bit of attention no doubt and quite possibly will need some truss rod adjustment a couple of weeks down the road.

And speaking of the tech, does he come well recommended? I'm not far from Finchley and my Jazzmaster is due some TLC, including possibly a new nut, so interested to know what your experience is like in terms of service and price!

  • I've a Zoom G1Xon languishing in a drawer somewhere that I never use (although I really should). If you're based in London, you're welcome to borrow it to see how you get on with the modelling/effects processor things.

  • I’ll DM you. He’s been around for decades and is a true old boy craftsman. I could have talked shop with him all afternoon.
Luckily the neck was still straight but he said he’d want to see it again a month after I pick it up for that reason.

  • Strange idea maybe - what about plugging a pedal amp (orange terror stamp) into a desktop size BT speaker - sonos type thing for low volume jams . Its a cab sim headphone out - but for bedroom noodling - why not - would it sound worse than headphones ? then i can build a separate real speaker cab for actual jams using the proper jack out from the pedal board. I will also run a reverb / delay pedal on the terror for vibes. Alternative is to run into more proper studio powered monitors.

  • Wasn't sure if I was really a guitar nerd until a YouTube video that I was enjoying just now included the line "Let's talk about Gibson pickguards in the 1940's and 50's."

I don't think I can really deny it any longer.

  • The other day I found myself trying to find a source that would really nail down the timeline of Les Paul knob types. Needless to say I'd be interested in seeing that video.

  • Finished off my second pedal today. Fuzzdog clone of an xotic BB preamp with caps to make it more bass friendly which I assume aligns it with the BB Bass Preamp. Very happy with the final product.
