  • I'm going to break rank and vote for dots. Blocks are cool but dots are much nicer I think!

  • I like dots too, but that fretboard doesn't suit the goth.

  • It looks like it, doesn't it? Should be ebony for max Goth points...

  • If it had an ebony board it would be on its way to me right now, it's lovely apart from the anaemic fretboard...

  • Does the first have gold hardware (which is a no from me) or some kind of aged nickel (which is a yes!)?

  • Nope, it's nickel which is quite unusual and makes it even more tempting!

  • .

  • Got a new little friend, it's taken me a while to get used to how tiny it is compared to my re-issue 57P bass which is an absolute beast!

Sounds good though, great for a bit of desk noodling! Yes there was budget creep.

  • Looks good, I’ve been idly bass shopping for a while and Mustangs have been on the list to consider, especially the PJ variants, they seem to sound thumping.

Nice amp & cab too, I love the colour of the TKS, was it a custom job?

  • suh-weeet!

  • I had a dream last night that I was backing prime career aged Bo Diddley at a series of gigs in the lobby of a big department store at Christmas. There was no backstage and the rider was a huge table of cheese and bread eset up next to the amps. My wife and her friends were enjoying this and some pre-gig shopping while we waited to go on. We all became good friends with Bo over three of four gigs. Then Judas Priest turned up and told us that they were due to go on instead of us as they were opening for Motorhead tonight. After a bit of a standoff we decided to wait for Motorhead to arrive to see what to do. Then I woke up.

  • Thanks - they're pretty fun to play! I'll probably use it as is for now but when the strings go off, swap them for flats for a bit more thump. The PJ's look good, I just think it's a bit of a shame they couldn't get a mustang style bridge onto them (even one of the smaller ones), not that the bridges are any better, I think they're just part of the look.

Kind of custom; I'm not sure if they're still going but at the time when you ordered you just picked your covering & grill cloth then they made it for you, it wasn't a special order or anything. If you wanted plain black with standard grill it would have been the same process. They're awesome cabs though; they do the mellow/vintage sound really well but then I've also gigged them in metal/hardcore bands too & they sound really aggressive when driven.

  • I want to see this as a live action TV show...

Mustang looks ace! Little basses rule...

  • I just think it's a bit of a shame they couldn't get a mustang style bridge onto them (even one of the smaller ones), not that the bridges are any better, I think they're just part of the look.

The american performer version does have a mustang bridge with a jazz pickup though. I've got an itch for one of those, but I think I'd need to lose one or two other basses first. Yours is the vintera?

  • So they do - must have missed that one, they have so many variations out at the moment!

Yes mine's the Vintera, fancied the JMJ as I (controversially for on here) do like a relic finish but couldn't justify the price difference for something that's not going to be my number one bass. Vintera has very similar specs (lollypop tuners, 41mm nut, alder body) for a chunk less. Pick-up sounds decent enough for me, though maybe one day I'll replace it for something else.

  • After some deliberation I think I'm gonna go for the cheaper of the two 335s, the Custom Shop is just way too much guitar for me right now and I can't justify A$6k on it...

The fretboard on the Dot bugs me a bit but I think it could possibly just need a feed, it's rosewood so I should be able to get it stained darker if lemon oil doesn't do the trick...

Right, I'm off to email someone in Japan!

  • Just pulled the trigger... Fingers crossed it isn't a lemon...

  • YESSSS! Exciting purchase man! This is going to be great!

Re: Fretboard, you could try India Ink to blacken it right up or if you don't want to go jet black James's Home Of Tone do a product called Montypresso (I've just bought some to darken the maple neck on the Bronco) which would definitely it knock it down a few shades!

  • I've been excitedly texting my tech guy all day, he doesn't think it'll be a problem but it's always a worry not knowing what colour you're gonna end up with... I could make it look worse!! Maybe the photo was making it look lighter than it actually is, the close-up pic looks quite a bit darker to my eyes...

    BTW I'm already eyeing up a Bigsby B7 and a Vibramate!!! 🤣🔫

  • Awesome! Fingers crossed for you man.

  • Congrats man! It looks a beaut!

  • joe moves back up to pole position in guitarkart.

  • Lots of semi-hollow envy rn.

  • Once this arrives there won't be anything else out there I want, a Dan Armstrong Plexi and a Jazzmaster are probably itches I'm not gonna scratch... I need to figure a way of locking out the B-bender then I won't be tempted to buy an Esquire...

Apart from a TB3000, obvs, I should start saving for one...
