I don't remember TM calling for the death penalty either. She was tasked with reducing immigration to the tens of thousands, so she did what she could to achieve that. That was a Cameron / Osborne policy. I don't think any of the various horrible ways the HO achieved that were particularly guided by racism, it was more a function of what they could get away with.
To be clear I don't think any of this makes her a nice person, or the policies morally better. But imo there is a difference between the people, which is the real reason people make jokes about Patel throwing babies back over a fence. But who knows, nowadays all these memes could just as well be created by BJ's media department to reinforce her "tough on immigration" image.

Yes I guess the roots are likely to be more complex than the theory I stated. Her family background is Ugandan so there's likely to be something of that in the mix.

Immigration enforcement does attract jingoists and the power-hungry. The UK has an, imperfect, points based visa system partly because of repeated, evidenced concerns over bias and discrimination within UKBA (now UKVI).
It’s management and leadership’s jobs to weed out hardcore racists and to educate their staff on racism. Sadly where the head goes the body follows, and the example at the top has been consistently poor for a while.

No, I absolutely did not mean anything negative by it, being the son of immigrants myself. Rather I see her as someone who is so desperate to be one of the elite that she’s willing to shit on other immigrants just to earn the praise of her masters. Her hypocrisy is as breathtaking as it is unsurprising.
