  • Mind you How I Met Your Mother is definitely a decent 'uns.

  • I'm gonna go out on a limb here... I love Big Bang Theory...
    #pennyismyfavourite

  • +1

And how I met your mother is fucking cack.

  • TBBT is great. Even my brother, the ex-lab-tecnician webdev loves it...
    Community wins though.

  • The laugh track on broadcasts is always there to make them seem funnier than they are to people listening at home alone.

That's probably true on the whole, but...

I remember watching a "how we make" episode of Friends. They said they often have to use canned laugher because the audience make too much noise - then played a sound clip which was full of people whooping and cheering every time Chandler paused to say something. Admittedly it was to promote the show.

Also I though the League of Gentlemen was interesting in that regard. I think it was the first series that had canned laugher, which made it a lot less dark.

As for people complaining about TBBT... most of the comments sound more like you have a problem with how you see yourselves or how you think you appear to others. It's standard T4 light sit-com entertainment, with a little bit of knowledge thrown in.

US sit-coms love jokes about human interaction, and always use some device to have an extreme character(s) to highlight what is odd about general human interaction/comm.s. It's not some sort of anti-geek propaganda.

  • It's ok to like TBBT, as long as you appreciate that you are wrong to do so.

I think it would be better if that were the case more, but it really isn't (imo). With the exception of an asperger*/*autistic character (which is all kinds of win, I think) they are fairly normal people with "normal" (by sitcom standards) quirks who simply make reference to "nerdy" things (Omg! Lotr! Comics!).

  • Can someone explain the Big Bang Theory memes please, lost on me... Do I need to have seen the show?

  • No, they're just not funny

    The memes that is...

  • @ horatio - I agree. I meant that you tend to have a few extremes and build on them. You also need an opposite and some straight people or someone to point out the absurdity. Sheldon/Penny + Leonard. Or in 3 1/2 men Charley/Alan, etc.

Then it's just about a USP. TBBT's is just science, as opposed to a beach or a school. I just don't see that there's anything that more notable about it than most others. I'm not an avid fan, I just think for vegging out I think it's one of the better ones.

  • Just to bring it back on to memes.

  • Lol. Steptoe. Fawlty Towers. That one with the Welsh chick who hooks up with the London guy. These are some of "your" sitcoms.

I think you misunderstood; I wasn't saying sitcoms of the American School were more or less shit in general than British ones, just that there is an identifiable school. Both schools have hits and misses.

  • What about the IT Crowd? i prefered it to TBBT. Both if them were recommended to me by friends (disclosure : I am a scientist working at a university).

+1 for the IT Crowd, but I often find the british comedies I like have either Graham Linehan, Chris Morris or both, behind them.

  • Workaholics and parks and recreation are awesome, would recommend

  • IT Crowd very very low gag ratio I thought - one or two corkers per episode, but way too much set up and not enough pay off for me

    Jen is kinda sexy though

  • I watched the first two episodes of 15 Storeys High yesterday; Although not typically labelled as a Sit-com, the situation produced much of the comedy. A similar set-up to Peep Show but without the internal monologue and shooting style which makes Peep Show so compelling.

15SH only lasted 12 episodes but I think Sean Lock was a better comic actor than plain standup/panel comedian.

  • 15 storeys high was ace!

  • Blue Rat - all the energy of a rat in a can

I loved 15 Stories High - good on the Radio too

  • It annoys the shit out of me. "Hee hee! Aren't dorks so autistic and loveable! They have no social skills! Hahahaha! Look how awkward they are! Now they're all hanging out in a comic shop! They can't relate to anyone, not even each other! Haha!"

Then people go "oh, you're a programmer, aren't you? You'll love this programme! It's all about you!"
i watch it for the blonde :-)
