  • This forum is Stalinist already with Velocio at the helm as an unelected leader/overlord /controller , in that respect i was acting in the "spirit" of this place. The members whose posts i illicitly doctored were acting in the manner of trolls . Their willful recidivist behavior was neither welcome , helpful or constructive, they seemed to take a vicarious pleasure in pissing off people they didn't know . They failed to follow the instruction on the heading of the social groups section of joining before posting and ignored our protestations. . They were not acting in the "spirit" of the Cambridge group .
In the past trolls have been censored by velocio . I think they had it coming , their posts were not even very original or funny . I had previously asked velocio why the block on non members posting was down and didn't really get a definite answer why .
Censorship is already rife anyway , new members are gagged during their nursery period, in the polo groups "no polo no talk policy" ,and generally potential posters are silenced by the fear of incurring the wrath of grumpy members .
Being a moderator was too much for me, the power was intoxicating and corrupting and like Saddam it wasn't too long before i began to to get "Uppity" .
I happily accept my punishment , and will always relish the memory of the thrill of hitting the "edit" icon and advise any new moderators to use it as thoughtlessly too.

P.s Bogey...aka types is even more evil than me.

  • lest we forget the whole reason the sub-forums exist is because london folk got fed up with non-london posts in 'their local area'. so your comment is a bit off the mark. give us a bit of leeway?

Off the mark? All I said is that I have occationaly posted in a sub-forum without realizing it, and have been greeted by grumpines. This cannot be off the mark, it is a fact. I would be ok with sub forums having the right to determine if they are open to everyone posting, or more of a members only posting forum.
I'm especially in favor of this if London can be members only as well. (BTW, that is a joke. kind of.)

You have just expressed the same view point as me, albeit from a different angle, so I'm guessing that we are both off the mark.

  • as folk have already said, we are a very close knit community (i am not doubting that london lot are any different). the forum is a neutral ground for us before we meet up to do our various activities. we get enough bother in real life from university students, knife wielding pensioners and old age chavs, without having to deal with the turmoil of sarcastic throw away comments from people we don't even know!! some of us have started to lose sleep over some comments.

Please god, tell me your trying to be funny.

  • i hope you got a good nights sleep last night.

  • i love to touch monkeys in funny places

  • our?

  • Please god, tell me your trying to be funny.

Don't take life too seriously fella it was a bit of fun :)

  • Is there any way that posters not members of the Cambridge forum could receive a pop-up notification when they are posting on a local forum? A kind of 'are you sure you mean to post here?' sort of thing?

Or leave it as it is. I'm sure we can be as rigourous as the re-post police on the main forum in pointing out Social Group Forum fails!

I agree with the pop up idea, or maybe just re apply the register to post rule?

  • Fella?

I asked because on the interwebz sarcasm falls flat.

Glad to hear you have a sense of humour.

  • ha ha! knowledge of london's famous london's famous couriers gender fail!

  • where as in London, no one knows anyone..... obviously.

and for the record, i didn't whinge or moan about this... VB found it on his own accord.

I agree, they should not be alowed to post on londons forum as they do not live here.

  • Anyone should be allowed to post on the sub-forums as long as they check before posting WHERE they are doing so. What was seen as annoying, and to some extent bullying, was posters from other parts of the forum making sarcastic and rude comments about stuff that had appeared elsewhere, but had only RECENTLY appeared on the CAMBRIDGE sub-forum. Yes, WE KNOW that the London lot are going to do Ride X, there's a thread about it, THAT'S HOW WE KNOW, so when a thread appears on the Cambridge forum about Ride X garnering local interest, it can be useful to have some input from the London crew, as long as it's not of the "repost" variety.

Surely there are general areas that cover funny videos, articles, new music etc that is on the interweb and actually go outside of Cambridge, then you have mechanical issues... which could just happen to people outside of Cambridge. just a thought.
Then you have your own social rides and social nites. which appear in Cambridge section that others aren't interested in.. Unless they are Cambridge bound.

But complaining about sarcastic and rude comments on this forum makes as much sense as Linda McCartney’s "looks like, smells like, tastes like bacon"

  • But complaining about sarcastic and rude comments on this forum makes as much sense as Linda McCartney’s "looks like, smells like, tastes like bacon"

On the contrary. I can't really see how anything posted on the Cambridge forum could be of any interest to folks in London. Many of the Cambridge members don't even look at the Main section. We are talking amongst ourselves, away from the main forum, covering topics that have probably been done to death elsewhere. If people from other parts of the forum make sarcastic and rude comments on our section I think we have every right to be pissed off. There are other sections or the forum where that kind of behaviour is well catered for.

  • I agree, they should not be alowed to post on londons forum as they do not live here.

I don't know a single person from the Cambridge section (other than me, and i practically live in London anyway) that posts on the main forum.

other people only as much as read the threads on the main forum, most only check the forum for the sub-forum

  • i don't mean to sound rude, or sound like i'm trying to get rid of people.... but if you all insist on having a something that is completely seperate to the 'London' side of things, why don't you set up your own forum.

thats what the bristol guys have done, and i think it works very well, i only really post in it when i know i'm going to be in the area, and want to check out whats going down.

  • ha ha! knowledge of london's famous london's famous couriers gender fail

Whoops!! I genuinely didn't know - apologies nhattattack.

Anyway back to topic, I'll be happy to run as moderator, and the sub-forum should be put back to register only to post.

  • What about rides/races/socials? I always check out what is going on in an area if I am due to head out there. It works both ways should the Cambridge people want to come down for a bridges ride etc

In short my argument is to keep it open as it involves/brings in more people. The only issue is you have a smaller closer knit community so get offended by the level or banal banter that takes place forum wide.

I am as guilty as the next for making out of line comments. Rob is the worst by far but he is a cunt so can be forgiven. But you do react on mass throw your toys out pretty quickly which is like a red rag to a sarcastic bull.

Why not get a moderator and ask VB to exclude the Cambridge sub forum from the “post” display so it can only be found through searching and browsing and not when listing most recently posted in threads

  • spaghettihoops - things were fine and dandy before the register only to post option was removed. it'd suck if we had to leave altogether, it was nice to be integrated as part of this large website. it's not nice to only have the option of leaving to resolve the issue.

greasy slag - that is a great idea, it would work well i think.

balki - not far from the truth, the muck spreaders are out in force and it fucking stinks around here

  • what?

  • What is this forum called?

I think the general focus may be on the first word.

We don't get over excited by non londoners making comments, so why are the provincial types getting so het up by the townies intruding their scene?

  • are greasyboy & slag an item?

  • yes, yes we are.

  • what?

I saw your post (Cambridge smell of poo and wee la di da di da blah blah) whilst making my post, and I replied to it. It does stink a bit here at the moment, given crops have been harvested and the land is being re-fertilised. Generally however, it's just the vagrants who make the place smell.

    :)

edit: looks like you deleted your post

  • We don't get over excited by non londoners making comments, so why are the provincial types getting so het up by the townies intruding their scene?

without wishing to repeat myself... londoners got very het-up when cambridge started to post their rides etc in the forum. LFGSS kindly set up a cambridge sub-forum. The rest is history. now since the 'register to post' option has been omitted (recently), anyone can post here.

so, we are allowed to get het-up, as we are merely defending our little piece of internet.

why does this irk people so much?

  • Thank fuck I don't live in the humour free zone that is the Cambridge bit of fgss cyberspace
