  • Clearly none of my technical questions are aimed at you...
Especially when this is your avatar

But you made me that avatar, Joni... Were you mocking me all along?
    weeps

  • Cranks weigh completely different amounts depending on their intended purpose.

Saints, imo, are super heavy, but they're meant for DH and as such are actually pretty light in that 'sector' of cranksets.

A good example of this is the Brompton Chainset. With BB, it weighs the same as an Ultegra 6700 chainset. It costs 55.00, why, then, thinks the roadie, should I pay for Ultegra? Well, the Brommy chainset is fine for its purpose, light spinning along flat ground. Who cares that the BB spindle, crank arm, and chainwheel will all flex under load? It's not about efficiency of power transfer & speed, it's about being able to put it on a bike that's expected to be carried with an arm, and folded up.

If you don't crash very often, or hop all over the place, or even if you don't mind replacing a crankset after a fall, crash, or period of abuse, then an XC MTB crankset like the Deore one I have, is fine. If you want your bike to be bombproof and never have mechanicals, then yeah, put Saints on the bike and live with the weight penalty, safe in the knowledge that next to nothing will take you out of the game.

This is the same as with your wheelset! Enjoy fast accelerating light wheels at the cost of frequently pringled wheels, or enjoy bombproof wheels at the cost of a slower bike/stronger rider.

  • That's the truth. It's all about finding the balance.

Does anyone use a Hollowtech II with a 135mm spaced freewheel hub though? I've got a 135mm Surly hub on my commuter and it requires a mega-wide square taper b/b (127mm if I recall correctly). I'm not sure I'd want to use those little plastic spacers to push out a hollowtech b/b that for, or if the axle is even long enough...

  • Sorry for starting this in the wrong thread btw.

Any recommendations for a nice crankset for Ali and her pomp?
    PS Joe I <3 you.

  • Anyone got a 26 front wheel preferably with braking surface and disk brake thingy?

Joni if I get one built by Vaidas, who's better to talk to you or Arunas?

  • wow, i love serious jimmy. such a sexy side to him. :)

  • Dan, is it a 68mm shell?

If it is, the axle will be long enough. The chainset can be installed on a 73mm shell.

I have it installed on my jump bike which has a 67mm shell (It has been faced many many times thorughout its life by the looks!) and I have 2 plastic spacers on the driveside to push it out far enough to acomodate my road chainring (it being a jump bike, the stays flare out for wider tires to be fitted, and is only expected to take tiny chainrings, i've had to push my chianset quite far out so the big chainring doesn't hit the chainstays).

I don't have any spacers on the none driveside. Its been fine!

and we'll look at prices and options.

  • Oh, I should say though; My chainline is horrific, I've countered this by using an 8speed chain rather than a singlespeed one; They have the same pitch so singlespeed sprockets will still work, but being an 8speed chain, it'll run diagonally without too much moaning.

As you full well know Brendan, every side, is my sexy side.

this was mentioned to me the other day, also discussed as a weight saver.

Yeah, and you'd be helping out your LBS, too. 8speed chains are far more popular and as such carry a better margin.

  • Yeah it's 68mm, or will be when it arrives (Marino). I'm going to stick with my cheap and cheerful square taper for the time being but may upgrade later on. 1/8" chains are pretty pointless in my opinion, but I need one for my cheap (...er than white industries) token freewheel so I'd need a bang-on chainline.

  • i just bought another token freewheel after hating the shimano one I was using, they're well good

  • Since we are on the subject, used but mint condition 170mm 68/73mm Saint cranks + Saint BB = £110, comes with FSA bash and chainringbolts but no chainrings.

Is that a solid recommendation? My Shitmano really isnt that old and is driving me fucking nuts, still don't really fancy shelling out for WI though

  • Yeah, I was using their alloy one last year, which they discontinued but they have recently brought out a cromo jobby. Used it a few times and it feels exactly the same, engages very quickly, sealed bearings and not too heavy. Also do a few more teeth sizes now. Pretty expensive, just not quite WI expensive

  • BTW polo peeps.

3/32 chains are looking hot for 2012. 8 speed chains also. Drop the BMX chain, it's doing nothing for you; heavy and not very sympathetic to your chainline issues.

  • ha!

Lock on grips are also hot for 2012

  • 8 speed chains also.

    You mean 3/32"?

  • I heard the 2.38mm ones were making a comeback too

  • ha!

Lock on grips are also hot for 2012

    Already on that shit.

  • I snapped my 4 month old 3/32 chain 4 times in 1 week so now I ride 1/8 KMC 710 and it feels much better, not sure if thinner chains in the same price range are up to the spinning that happens on a polo bike…

If one wants to lose weight go on a diet ;-)

  • Well said :)

Fitted a Funn grey pair last weekend, unused £5 from eBay :-D
