  • Cheers dude.
I guess the other issue would be wheel base.

Hope you don't mind me putting the pictures up. It is awesome.

  • Anyone got a double lever for sale? wouldn't mind running double before LO

  • I do. It's a v-brake one that Rik modified. You'd need barrel adjusters though. Oh wait, Gormely might have taken the modified pin type thing.

Will check what's left of it tonight.

  • ^^^ not at all! its a sturdy machine and wheelbase is only a trend anyway ;) put a pair of 2.5's in it and you'll be touching the seat tube (i run 2.1's now).

  • Woody if you find someone in London with a dual, I'm coming back to Brighton tomorrow morning for my graduation and could drop it off like.

  • wheelbase is a trend

    Ha, brilliant. T-shirt right there.

Makes a big difference in goal though.

Tenderloin, do you know cheesecake intl? I need a favour from Brighton. :)

  • Jack was looking for a new bike?

(The wheelbase won't be affected by bigger tyres.)

  • Here's what I'm thinking re: grills and helmets... Because I feel like telling you all where I'm at.

Kayak polo helmets and cages seem good. The cages are light and the bars not too thick. Helmets have vents too. The Pro-tec ones look good. You can get quite open canoe polo cages which would be great. Unfortunately I haven't found any here in the uk so you'd have to cut out some bars.

Heavy helmets suck. Especially when they have no vents either. Ice hockey helmets seem heavy and cover too much of the head. Hurling helmets seem better but have bulky foam inside. More pro ice hockey helmets have lighter padding plus memory foam inserts. You'll need something to wick sweat away from the forehead. Cages for these helmets are good but you need some support around the neck area. Canoe grills are easier to attach and hold their position. (Can't adjust once fitted).

Baseball, American Football, and Softball helmet all seem bulky and heavy. The grills for them have thick bars. Fixcraft cage is just a baseball one (I think) It's a nice set up with the Bern but something much lighter would be better. And Berns make you sweat.

Cricket helmets seem good though actual helmet may be a bit oversize.
Grills are the best I've seen and bars are relatively thin which helps with vision.
Some have more wires than others. They hold a good shape and don't need to be held down with a chin strap.

    Todd's verdict:

Cycling helmets can be found cheap. They have vents and are really light. The downside is they can smash easy or might have to be changed over sometimes.
You want the protection without the weight right?
Easy enough to replace. I've seen some decent ones in the sale recently for £20 etc.
If you want something more durable get a low profile bmx helmet with a ton of vents.

Cricket cage. Lighter the better and attach it to a cycling helmet. Titanium ones are almost half the weight of steel. You don't want them to weight the front of the helmet down.
I've recently seen new ti grills for £30 online on offer.

If you attach them right they should last well. Mallets and balls to the face will be fine. (tilt grill up to give better eye protection)
A fall might break it if the cycling helmet is a mega light ventilated one. MTB ones look tougher.

Protect your face. I keep getting closer and closer to a big mallet swings. The UK champs final frightened the shit out of me when challenging low for the ball. Even those with the best mallet control will swing to hit the ball. And I don't want to back out of any challenge 'cause I'm scared.

I've bought a Masuri Ti grill and will be attempting to attach it to my Ekoi city helmet which is incredibly light. I hope it works out.

    The end.

  • Wicksie yeah, whats up?

  • I do. It's a v-brake one that Rik modified. You'd need barrel adjusters though. Oh wait, Gormely might have taken the modified pin type thing.

Will check what's left of it tonight.

    You got mail

  • Thanks for that post Todd. It answers all the questions that have been plaguing my mind. I can't see shite whilst wearing the bauer, though am grateful for the face protection. Have been trying to think of a better option, because I don't want to be scaredied out of challenges.

I anticipate hearing of the results of your experiments with the Masuri girll and Ekoi helmet..

  • Nice Todd.

One thing, cricket grills tend to stick too far out for my liking, although I guess if you are fitting it you can adjust this.

I am planning to take the foam out of my hurling helmet and put some pads in.

  • I have some Kayak helmets in Devon, hmm. Kayak lids are multi-impact too, bonus?

Face cages are a trend, there I said it.

  • Cricket grills can be fitted in many positions. Yes they stick out but how does that effect the size of the wire you're seeing?
If it's closer to the eye it appears bigger right? But then you see less of them...
I shall tackle these issues when I build my helmet up.

I chose the Masuri because of the wire design. Not too many but in the right positions.

I was also wondering how a white/silver cage will differ to black and what the benefits of a black cage could be.

    Raging mallets are the trend.

  • Pro tec helmets are really good as they're vented and quite light. A good cheap option would be this and one of those softball masks for £3. This is pretty much what I'm wearing and I really like it. It's not too font heavy and there's only a bit of the bar in the line of vision.
This probably should go to the protection thread as I think there was a bit of a discussion about high sticking. If you mention it, it's never well received so I'm inclined not to. I personally see a need to wear a face mask and am trying to get used to mine.
There's a chance I'll be selling mine soon as it's a smidge too big for my pea head, and I'd like a more vented one for when I go to Oz.

  • As Gormley stole the integral part of Erins doubel lever, does anyone else have one going?

  • They play fricking Canoe Polo! Freaks.

  • "Kayak polo" actually, you have to be able to hand roll, I nearly drowned.

  • Re: helemts...

Cricket helmets break playing cricket. If a batting player is on the hard end of a fast ball, the helmet just cracks. Saw it happen during one of the one day matches recently.

Josh took a huge mallet strike across the face at the UK Champs. I have relatively little doubt that if he had an open grill or one that was attached slightly wrongly then he would need a new face.

Sure a hockey helmet is hot and heavy but it was made to deal with the abuse it will be getting. The vision thing is something you get used to. Pucks move a lot faster than polo balls.

whats this £3 softball mask, i own a protec so whoudl suit me too

  • As Gormley stole the integral part of Erins doubel lever, does anyone else have one going?

    Ha!

I have a rik lever which is also missing the pin. I you look long enough at newt you might find it.

It's a shelve pin from ikea so you might be able to make one quite easily if you can get hold of a pin and decent drill.

  • ...Hurling helmets seem better but have bulky foam inside...

My experience so far with a Mycro helmet is above average. The main thing I was concerned about was visibility and not wanting to cut bars out of an existing cage leaving burred edges etc. For that, the cage is brilliant, although the raw metal does sometimes pick up some gnarly reflections on our indoor court. The slightly cheap looking chinstrap held on with cable ties is relatively comfortable – however facial hair any longer than a finely kept goatee will make it pretty uncomfortable.

But... and it's a really big but... I have never ever sweated as much wearing a helmet in my life. Even when playing in the shade of the warehouse, after two or three fast paced games... unbelievable beads of sweat constantly rolling down my face which the face cage make pretty hard to wipe away. There are vents all over it and although the quirk of it being handmade is pretty nice, the padding (which isn't necessarily bulky, however it's made of quite cheap feeling squeaky polystyrene material) doesn't always line up with the vents and my god... Did I mention how sweaty it is?
