"Pushes cross-ply Land Rover tyres up a hill'*
Are we having 'fun' yet?
-
• #61
have you ever owned or ridden one? I had more 'fun' mountain biking on mine than i have on most other bikes....i've never been passed by anyone whilst climbing on mine...the tyres weigh less than the majority of regular sized DH/Freeride tyres.

im finding that hard to believe sry Scott, but even if they were lighter, the extra weight in the rim, being as wide as they are, would make it heavier.
in any case, i don't like those bikes at all, seems silly to me to put such big tyres on a bike. I got along just fine with my 2.75's when i MTB'd the dirt tracks back home.

I wonder if it possible to hire one.

Hard to believe or not it's true.
The rims are also not as heavy as people think because they're not designed for DH so don't need the same strength.
As i've said before...they're no different to ride than anything else, but allow you to ride on terrain that your narrower tyres would fail on...and i'm speaking from 2yrs worth of Pugsley experience. -

the Surly endomorph tyre weighs 1260g the biggest maxxis ardent d/h tyre for e.g weighs 1270g. Surprising is that.

Mmm, Soviet-looking bike. Complete with utilitarian housing for the workers...
-
• #68
I suppose (only a theory of course) it's because of the amount of thread on the tyres, you don't need that much rubber on the Surly for grip as you do on a normal downhill tyres.

Clearly there's no room...

Oh.

Is there a rule on what size tyres/wheel required for a downhill event?

Is the Ardent over 3yrs old? DH tyres were bigger back when endomorphs were created...back then there were 3", 2.7", 2.5" tyres...for example, a Nokian Gazzaloddi = 1600g
Either way....unlike most of you i've ridden one as my main xc bike for 2yrs and loved every minute i spent on it. That's enough for me. -

Oh.
Clearly not, as if you understood the part about "allow you to ride on terrain that your narrower tyres would fail on" that clearly doesn't mean cyclocross does it...as cyclocross tyres don't fail to gain traction in cyclocross races do they.
I would have expected a more well thought out come back from you. -

No tyre size rules. Many bikes actually run 24" wheels to accomodate larger tyres or more suspension travel.
I personally, have always wanted a purple s&m challenger bmx. Ive never seen one for sale though.
Also a good traditional tourer, and Itd be cool to have the space & place to ride a full suss mtb.

cripe! I've forgetting about that tyres back in the heyday of MBUK before they got brought (I think?) by Bike Radar.
I own two of my dream bikes already, though upgrade to full Record and better wheels would make them even more dreamy:
Then I just need one of these - this one was built for a friend [but NOT with those wheels!]:
Followed by at least one proper track bike from the same stables ;-)
What the hell, all 3 track bikes from the same stables since we're dreaming...
Oh, and a titanium DR or Moser as a winter trainer.
And a vintage Masi.
Or is that just being greedy?
