the problem was that there was no room for him to get past.
the bit I object to is being "a sound bloke" it'll do terrible polising to my perfectly tarnished reputation

Biological accuracy aside, a whale is a fuckin fish.

lets recount
he was in his car beeping continuously whilst shouting over the top of his horn
clearly he wanted and was emotionaly capable of engaging in rational debate
I realise I'm taking this too seriously for some of you, but I'm just trying to make the point that there are other ways of dealing with this situation which are less likely to end in you being hurt.
Sure, you probably wouldn't get a sensible response, but that doesn't mean you have to lower yourself to his level, provoking him certainly isn't going to reduce the chances of you getting hurt. It's surprising how being calm and polite in the face of abuse can wrongfoot someone and defuse the situation.
also
I stand in front and he then tries to ram me, 3 times he tried to hit me and I had to get out of his way.
why stand in front of him? why further provoke him? I'd have just got off and walked away, he's hardly going to mount the pavement to try and run you over. It's all very well being in the right, but I'd rather not get hurt. You might say it was in the name of teaching a driver to be more responsible towards cyclists, sure that's a nice idea, but is it worth getting hurt for?

Risk calculation required for each situation and different strokes for different folks.

was crossing kew bridge cycling next to another bike when a van started beeping at me...
To be fair when I'm driving and some cyclist infront is riding shotgun to another I always lay it on thick with the horn and tell them where to go, especially now as the Spanish are in town for the summer schooling at the Uni's, and they're out in force on rent-a-bikes not giving a fuck. I don't know "Single file you fucking bellend!" in Spanish but the V's is international and tends to do the trick

Pretty sure the Highway Code okays two cyclists riding side by side, but not three or more.
