Have you got a fat arse?

  • Yeah, OK. I admit it - I just love rolling around in hay. It's an all year habit that only gets harvested for a short period.

  • haha

  • For those who want to have a Brooks saddle but find themselves sitting on the metal frame instead of the leather part inbetween due to their sit bones being too wide, I find the Brooks B68 to be a great alternative, especially for those who want a Brooks B17 style saddle, I no longer find myself sitting on the metal frame and finally feel comfortable to ride in with;

  • Nice one Ed. How much did that one set you back and how long have you been riding it? Have you given it long enough to know whether it's going to stay comfortable or not?

  • £45, which is pretty good, on pair if not cheaper than the Brooks B17

It's very very stiff and hard at first (as per usual)but it's getting noticeably comfortable and my sit bones is just right where it should be, I think it's going to be my saddle of choice from now on, didn't really like that Spes 175mm saddle, too much padding make riding feel pretty spongy.

  • Nice one Ed, does this mean we can meet up now and talk in BSL?

  • Do you find that it's comfortable on your scrotum though? I find that I can ride a saddle that is too narrow by hotching forward, but then I get a lot of pressure on the goods!

  • a little bit, but it's sorted after dipping the nose down by a millimetres or two.

if you're worried about that, Brooks have the B68 Imperial as well.

  • It's a nice saddle with a great vintage look to it, Ed. My backside would love it

  • Come on guys, now I know I'm a fellow fat arse I want to know more about saddles that other people have found comfortable.

  • Bump.

The fat arses around here seem to have stopped posting. I'm still having trouble finding a good wide saddle to cater for my child-birthing sit bones!

  • my arse is so fat it snapped a reinforced carbon seatpost last weekend.

  • I got recommended a Specialized Alias rather than a Toupe, because of my size and the weight of shit I'm generally toting around with me. And I'm seriously pleased about the extra padding - I could actually do with a little more maybe.

So I'm now using a 2010 Alias, have been for a few weeks. It's comfy, flat so I can slide backwards or forwards a little if I need to adjust my position and it's re-educating my arse in what a saddle should feel like. I now realise I have been sitting astride the neck of the saddle whenever I've ridden before and this is the first time I'm actually sitting on my sit bones. Which is a strange and slightly uncomfortable thing which will take a while of getting used to, but on the plus side, I haven't had a whisper of numb-cock syndrome since I bought it.

I now have the problem though of trying to completely readjust the way I sit on the bike, where to position the saddle, how hight the seatpost should be etc. It's really odd to think that I've not sat properly on a bike since I took up riding again a few years ago. Odd, but a lot more comfortable in th long run...

  • Anyone ever tried one of these ugly mofos?

I'm stuck in a time warp where the nicest saddle I have is the early 90s foam cheap shit thing on my hack and it's getting very very ratty. Also, one (ugly) saddle doesn't fit on 3 bikes. Long term I need to find something wide, soft(ish) and aesthetically pleasing, but short term this beaten by the ugly stick saddle looks comfortable and it is very cheap.

    Thoughts?

  • ask pifko

  • Why not get this instead?

ripping off the Arione, but for £5 more its a steal. Got one on my beater and its rather good. Not as good as the real deal maybe, but for a 1/5 of the price you can't complain

  • ask pifko

    Fuck you, vegan.

  • Why not get this instead?

    Because it's a narrow saddle.

  • Because it's a narrow saddle.

    Agreed.

  • So far that awful Rido is fairly acceptable, I'm not comfortable, but not got any pain though (well a lots less than originally), which is a nice change.

  • The fat arses seem to cope with a broad saddle, but what about those trying to ride with a gunt, that elipsoid bulge betwixt waistband or belt and unmentionables at the front? Good luck to you sirs and madams but that's a lot of pressure to apply to one's bladder. Boils on inner thighs seem a frippery in comparison.

  • that elipsoid bulge betwixt waistband...

  • I decided for a tenner that it had to be worth a try.

Almost like we need sub threads:

    1) Aesthetically pleasing saddles for the larger gentleman.
    2) Ugly but comfortable saddles for the larger gentleman.

I'll let you guys know what this thing is like.

  • my friend paul has a fat arse. he's lost many many ill-secured bike saddles.

  • The more I cycle, the less padding I have on my backside and the more my saddle hurts - especially with 30lbs of rucksack a lot of the time. Big bloke, bony arse, bad combo.

The Specialized Alias I bought is ok for general riding, but for anything over fifty miles, it starts to hurt. So I'm thinking of trying an Avatar next - looks like it's one step up in terms of padding. But they still only come in 155mm and TBH, I'd like something a bit wider - I'm still on the edges even at that width. May have to take Ed's advice and buy a B68.

Ed, have you been riding that Rido saddle? How wide does it come?
