  • That's not the past tense. It's the present perfect - the most apt tense to use when you're trying to convey the relevance of an event from the past to the current situation.

    Tense Pedant

I'm all about aspect, not tense :p

  • Its not complicated people, its just english

it's "it's just English" here, Giz..

Literally - gotta be right up there.

How is it Polis can only speak in the past tense on those Pig Watch shows? 'He's gone over a set of Reds, I've followed him, he's gone for a decamp after which I've gone to block the passenger door, but he's got away.........he's literally made a run for it, so I literally gave chase....'

    that's the present perfect tense.

  • bollocks BMMF got in their the pedantic cunt

  • Literally

Can't believe I missed that one.

I literally crapped myself when I realised.

[Actually a small amount of poo has come out so I have, so there]

  • yes the their was deliberate you excited freaks.

  • bollocks BMMF got in their the pedantic cunt

Yeah, I've had been doing both of them correctives more earlier.

  • Yeah, I've had been doing both of them correctives more earlier.

    More betterer

  • Trouble is I get on a bit of an ironic tip in order to try and cope with these things and unfortunately unless I know someone fairly well they will have no idea I'm saying stuff like "chillax" (which I think is genius) in a tongue-in-cheek way, which basically means I'm just saying it. The fact that I feel the need to bandy about new argot in a tongue in cheek way makes me fairly weird, I'm well aware of that. But yeah, just to clear it up, if you ever hear me saying "my bad" it will be because I basically hate the general public.

Well, I could have been talking about the spin applied to a tennis ball, that is written with a lower case 'e'

[But I wasn't so, I am guilty. I literately died when I realised, so....]

  • A phrase which seems to have infected my office recently is "what it is" used instead of "the reason I wanted to talk to you" or indeed any other phrase describing why they want to communicate something.

Leading to the rather inelegant "what it is is that it is..."

do you happen to work with a lot of welsh people dammit?

    Reminds me of this

die a little more, Giz, I meant your use of the third person genderless possessive.

  • 'third person genderless possessive'

Now theres one thats really annoying

    ;-)

  • To quote one of my favourite Theo Parrish tracks...'Ebonics'

"Black dialect is an expressive, vivid, living language...if we reject it, how little have we gained, and how much have we lost?"

You lot are grumpier than me sometimes :) Accept that everyone looks, acts, and even talks differently...if you don't want to use certain words or phrases, don't.

  • @ Scott-accepted, the reason for OP was just because this particular individual was speaking in a room with 4/5 people present and she actively wanted to be heard using this phrase. Seemed really odd and forced.
the contributors here have posted varied and interesting responses which have to be read well to understand the nuances intended. I would expect nothing less from you fixengers.
I am still consistantly amazed at how (primarily) teenagers (de)construct sentances with the use of 'like' so that they become virtually meaningless....

  • literally meaningless would have been *way *more better like

  • Wanting to be heard is something that's internal to the person regardless of what language or words they use.
Same as wanting to be seen by wearing certain types of outfits.
Teenagers will always go against what 'grown ups' do or tell them to do.

Although if i were to actually join in this discussion in the way you'd have preferred...i'd have to say i hate how people on here like to label everyone as some kind of fucking '...ENGER' !!!
    ;)

  • complainenger

  • beat me to itenger

  • SEE!...that's what i mean! Just like that!

  • At the end of the day, it's twenty four seven. End of.

  • ;)

I'll tell Em you used that smiley.

  • in a tongue-in-cheek way

in a tongue in cheek way

    Make your mind up.

    Or make up your mind.

    I can't decide.
