Wow. Thanks Steff, I'll put your number down. Anybody else about on Sunday?

fuckin scum...there's so many of these bastards about. if its any sympathy its not confined to the big smoke. had my first fixer lifted from my back garden a few back. only got it fixer after i had a sweet kona mtb robbed from the front garden, locked around a tree...cambridge's flatness prompted the switch and never looked back.
has anyone found any lock/locking (ahem) strategy they can rely on? sensible and daft options welcome. considering wiring up the frame of my new bike to the mains or a car battery overnight. surely you can get a gps dongle or something hidden in a seat post or something nowadays?

I might be around for an extra set of eyes. Speak to the market officers first thing, give a picture of your bike and they will look out for you as well. I have recovered 2 bikes from dick lane in this way.

Two d-locks through frame, wheels and immovable object (making sure the d's are "full" so a car jack/lever won't fit in) behind a security pass access door which is behind a 24-hour security-guarded pass-checking entrance gate.
And that's not perfect nor will anything ever be 100% secure. You do what you can.

No more info on Carl. The pub (Scolts Head) where my stuff was stolen have had run ins with him.. Threatens to chuck bricks through their windows when they've tried to question him about various things that have gone walkies. He stole a bike out of the pubs back yard which was locked up behind a locked gate.
When I went to BLB to get them to write out a quote for my insurance which Jan did without hesitation they asked what had happened and where, they also mentioned a guy called Carl without any prompting from me...
So someone must know something about him.
Wouldn't mind having a chat with him.

How did the act of recovering happen? D-Lock to the face or going there with the market officers?

It would be cool if people could post what kind of locks are getting broke. I know any lock can be defeated with time etc... but it would be handy to know if they are cheap locks or not, or if a there is a run of particular lock getting broke.

It was locked with 2 D-locks, and a cable lock. I don't know what kind of D's but they definitely weren't Krypto's.
Police have said they'll call me about it in 3/4 weeks (useful!) but have spent the afternoon putting up posters in BLB and 14. Both really helpful, either with advice on what do on at Brick Lane on Sunday ("Bring some muscle" - Jan) or offering discounts on new wheel builds, but still hoping I can recover it.
I'll be at the market on Sunday from about 7 if anyone fancies an early bit of spying/justice. Will buy you a coffee! Cash reward in your hand if you recover it and break at least 4 of the culprits teeth. -

Because I had no stands to lock to in the garage mine was secured only with a Kryptonite cable.

Unfortunately we hear all too often the bikes have been nicked when locked up with relatively rubbish locks (cables etc), even though lots of us have chains and mini Ds.
EDIT - Still sucks...

I had two sets of wheels stolen from round there.... it's not clever to lock your bike up outside at all in that area... perhaps certain streets are ok, the ones towards Islington and Newington Green are better but I'd still worry.... It's a shame that you have to learn from experience when it comes to locking up in that area.
I'm moving to new office just off Well St and one important thing is a heavy fucking door and 5 locks. It's not nice out that way!

be careful if it's someone who threatens to throw bricks through a fucking window.

i brought a lock for £7 from chainreaction in a sale. the mechanism jammed so i had to cut it off, it took:
40minutes of sawing. a pint. then some swearing. then a trip to the hardware store. £34 to upgrade to some of these:
2mins later - bike was unlocked. i think i could get through most locks in 2minutes these days. -

i live in E8 but i wasn't near dalston last night. not guilty he pleads.

We should all buy one of those disc alarm locks that Clefty has got, I know I am. Think they would seriously stop loads of bike thefts as it just makes it incredibly difficult.
Might get three, one for each wheel and another for the crank. Brilliant.

Next bike (or recovered bike) I'm gonna get one of those, or 6. Maybe even attach 2 to my body so when I hear the other ones going off I can run at the culprick screaming at 130db

i think hybridising one with a tazer is the way forward.
first the twat gets fried, then they get sprayed. if frying is a good enough deterent the bike stays as is i.e. no skethcy paint job. after frying and spraying surely any self-respected pikey would be well fucked off.

that's usually the problem, your mate rightly decided to lock it with two lock instead of one, but didn't realise the extend of the crime in the E postcode area, that reach to the point that you'd need at least two lock costing £100-150 combine just to lock it for a couple hours.
such a shitty thing, the government has yet to make the law stricter for bike theft, other countries have low theft, even just a simple £5 cable lock is enough but the downside is that the law being different to the point where you can easily be wrongly accused and likely to get prosecuted without a fair hearing.
I'm just down the road and happy to help out if I'm about - phone number in the numbers thread in Private.
