You wear merino to cool down. Sheep wear merino in summer as well otherwise they get roasted.
Not really. It's cooler than most alternative materials of equal thermal usefulness but I never wear it to cool down. I doubt sheep would if they had a choice.
– Sheep getting dropped on the Tourmelet in July just to prove my point.

Do you mean the extraordinarily humid Thailand?

Fucking hell - why does everyone have to take everything so literally. If you run hot, or have a high sweat rate whilst doing high intensity riding, merino is probably not the best material for you to wear as a base layer. You'll need one of the pro team ones (or just one of the Craft mesh ones which are half the price).
I only wear merino for commuting (as a single layer) and in the winter - all other times I would rather have lots of thin layers.

team sky riders have been genetically modified to grow a thin downy layer of merino wool so they don't need baselayers.

I saw a Paragon rider on Layhams yesterday who was wearing fleece tights, winter gilet, winter jersey, a cap, and oversocks. It was 25 degrees and 12.30. To be fair he was thin as hell and riding REALLY REALLY slowly.

• #16871
only problem w/the craft base layers is they don't have the lycra side-panels that the rapha PT layers have to hold their shape, so they end up misshapen w/use over time
-
• #16872
Wash them @ 60 degrees and they return to original size
