I wore my winter jersey and my softshell a handful of times this winter. Just wasn't cold enough.

^^^ I've worn my PTJ (with varied baselayers) almost every day since mid January, for comparison.

Aye, apart from the recent mildness, I've worn mine all the time. Back with it today too.

Transfer jacket looks like my arcteryx atom lt. Light insulation (60g/m^2 coreloft). It is good for around freezing temp commuting. Gets sweaty quite quick. Worse than my softshell for anything involving proper riding.

Commuting, proper riding or both?

That jumper would have been the absolute dogs bollocks in 1986 when I last wore one.
Must just have been scotland they came back in around 2006.

does the promutting jacket fit into a jersey pocket?
i recently purchased a race cape...are they comparable?

Both but I tend to avoid proper riding when it's raining and warm up quickly on my commute.

Hah, indeed.

I've got the Hardshell jacket but find that I:
a) sweat like a pig in it
b) it ride's up at the back meaning I have to keep yanking it down to cover the pockets in my jersey.Anyone have the race cape or rain jacket and wish to recommend which one is best?

The PTJ won't fit into a jersey pocket, but most of the time you'll only need to wear that and a base layer anyway

By the sounds of it a) is a direct consequence of b).

Had the same experience last night that I've read about upthread - going to the shop to try something on for size (the PTJ) and being told to size down.
Are they just trying to make us lose weight by riding more, and ultimately buy more Wapha?

If you mean that the jacket riding up is due to the material not having much stretch/give which is also why it doesn't breath and makes me sweat...then yes

No, I read your comment to mean that you had a jersey on underneath the hardshell.

what would you suggest wearing under a hardshell jacket?
it's for use in wet cold conditions, so just baselayer isn't going to do the job.
The jacket doesn't have any pockets, so you have to stash your kit in the pockets of the jersey...and the jacket rides up over those. -

Baselayer, long sleeve jersey and a gillet would sufficient in your commute.
Hardshell is quite overkill.

I'm not commuting...this is 30-40 mile weekend ride in cold & wet.
Wish I'd not bought Hardshell now having worn it 3 or 4 times.
It's annoying and sweaty. That's why I now want something to protect against rain...so hence race cape / rain jacket
I'm edging towards race cape -

I would recommend either the rain jacket or classic wind jacket, recommend the latter as it fit quite small in a jersey pocket.
Where are you that it's always cold and wet?
-
• #15949
Isn't the wind jacket supposed to be the best compromise between water proofing and breathability?
-
• #15950
Yup, prefer it over the Rain Jacket due to feeling slightly less damp in them and still held out well in the rain.
PTJ is a great bit of kit for proper riding, winter jersey is my choice for days like today when I'm commuting (with a rain jacket in the bag in case it pisses down).
