In the search for a resolution to my constant dithering for a winter(ish) jacket I'm now looking at the Classic Wind Jacket.
Which I think used to be the stoaway jacket or something. I was put off the Classic Softshell Jacket when the discount was on as I tend to run quite hot.
My main issue at the moment is the cold/wind on my chest when riding. So I am umming and ahhhing between getting a cheap softshell gilet or possibly the Classic Wind Jacket. The logic of the Classic Wind Jacket is that it should stop the wind and be warm enough with a jersey +base layer underneath. Also it would mean having a nice rain jacket.
Any thoughts on 1) how wind-proof it is, and 2) how breathable it is?
Cheers.

I bought the wind jacket at a sample sale some time ago and it is great, however while it is good against wind and in cool-ish temperatures, I don't find it incredibly warm (haven't worn it much recently for example) and it definitely is not a rain jacket. It beads water when new but that quickly goes away. You can supplement it with nikwax, but don't expect it to be a rain jacket IME.

Three words for you...Pro Team Jacket.
Still awesome in -2'C
Windproof
Water resists alright (initially great, unsure now that i've had it a while and haven't been out in proper rain recently) - resists, not proof
It's nice, but not on sale so a bit pricey -

I was planning on wearing the PTJ over a baselayer this Sunday, but now wondering whether base layer+jersey+PTJ, with rain jacket in pocket might be a better idea.
Or, will I boil?

Better hot than cold.
Just unzip the layers underneeth if warm and the top layer too if hot. -

The Wind Jacket is excellent IMO. It is windproof and it is far more breathable than you might expect, I've happily worn it all day on long cold rides. Plus it easily stuffs into a jersey pocket. I reckon it's more versatile than a gilet.
It's about as rainproof as the classic softshell, i.e. it'll keep light showers off you but if it's pouring you will get wet. It dries quickly though. It's a bit cooler too, I'd say base layer + jersey + wind jacket is about the same as a softshell with just a base layer.
The first one I had was a Stowaway I got in the sample sale years back. I subsequently lost a lot of weight and needed to size down, and in the absence of a discount code or sale I paid full whack for a new one. And I've just ordered another one in a different colour in this sale. That's how much I like it.

I wear: sleeveless baselayer + long sleeve baselayer on the really cold days under the PTJ. This is all that's needed..

Would not think wearing a jersey under the softshell is a good idea. Baselayer, softshell jersey and windbreaker should be perfect.

This morning, what, like 5'C? - PTJ, long sleeve merino base, winter hat - perfect for my short commute.

My thermometer said 1.9 degrees when I left the flat.

Yes windproof, pretty breathable, but not a rain jacket.
It's my favourite jacket. I run quite hot and am still commuting in a base layer and wind jacket combo.
If it snows I'll go to softshell, but have barely used it since I got a wind jacket.- It packs down small to go in a jersey pocket.
