• Went with XT dimensions as I'm reasonably sure these are the same. Means 48 x 286mm spokes and 16 x 288mm. I've ordered 100 x 286mm Sapim Race, in the hope that the 2mm rounding down wont be too much. I'm pretty sure I have some 289mm DT Comps lying around if I'm not happy with the amount of thread engaged.

  • I had a nightmare with my last wheel build, was using a set of hubs which were meant to be Shimano Golden arrow but they had grooves to guide the spokes along the flange. I calculated the spokes for a 3x but the spoke guides won't let the spoke reach the hole they should. I reckon they're designed for 2x lacing which is odd!

    I'll get pictures up later.

    If it was a 28 spoke hub then 2x gives the best angle.

  • anyone know what length of spoke i need for gran compe to open pro radial (it's a front wheel obviously)? i usually use http://lenni.info/edd/ but it only has the rear hub in it's database.thanks in advance.

  • i used the BLB front hub in the database (BLB says their hubs are the same measurements as gran compe) .. and spokes turned out to be the right length =)

  • I need some help with with spoke sizes please, looking to build a pair of mavic CXP 33 RIMS on to miche primato hubs 32 hole x3 cross, any ideas

  • A friend has a 2006 Langster that he's dropped a couple of spokes on - going to rebuild the rear for him with the stock hub and rim but I was hoping to order the spokes ASAP as I won't be able to get my hands on the wheel to measure it until the weekend.

    Anyone happen to know the required spoke length? (32H 3-cross AFAIK.)

    I think the rims are Alex DA16 (ERD 535.3mm according to the internets) so if anyone just knows the rear hub dimensions that would do me...

    Thanks

  • easiest thing would be wait till you get the wheel, measure the spoke and pop into an evans/cycle surgery and buy a couple of spokes over the counter ..seen as all that money you would save buying two spokes on the internet would be taken up by the cost of postage.

    ^That's an MTB rim ERD. Deep V are 582mm and H Plus Son 557mm.

    Whoops, copied the wrong one. ERD 596.9mm for the 700C.

  • (Sorry for starting a new thread btw, did see this thread and searched it for "Langster" but didn't realise it had general spoke length queries.)

    Probably will have to wait to get hold of it. I'm doing a full rebuild though because he's snapped several spokes over the last year and I think the remaining original ones are pretty fatigued. Having them replaced at Evans probably didn't help either. He's a heavy rider so he ought to have a strong 36H wheel but doesn't want to pay for a whole new build so I'm going to just re-lace it with some better spokes (maybe even the Sapim Strong ones).

  • Any hi flange track hub (Formula, Goldtec, Shimano , Phil) and 597mm 3x 32H gives you 288mm.

  • What a hero. Thanks very much. Might just get him to check the hub dimensions himself tonight but that's super useful.

    Didn't know there was so little variation in high flange hub dimensions.

  • I have a Khamsin rim and need to try and calculate the spoke lengths for it.

    I am lacing one side radial with 9 spokes and the other 3 cross with 18 spokes. I can easily get the radial length but was wondering if anyone has any smart ideas as to what length to do the 3x side. I have included three illustrations to try and help

    red = Non Drive Side
    green = inside flange
    blue = outside flange

    This picture shows what the rim would be like if completely drilled it would have 54 holes in theory.

    bigger ones here

  • Can't it be treated as a normal 36 hole 3cross for the drive side?

  • don't think so as it is going to be at different angles

  • A bit of a bodge, but Wheelpro's calculator allows you to put spoke numbers in as multiples of 4, so 52 and 56 come up with a length. In between?

  • go to a shop that builds wheels and have loads of different spoke lengths in stock, or even a spoke cutter and roller...

    trial and error ftw.

  • I suspect Dylan is right. But you shouldn't need loads of spokes. The maths for normal calculations won't work. Roger Musson, the Wheelpro man, does have a different calculation method using radians, but I'm not sure how that works.

    Just looking at the tangent angle of the spoke at the hub implies a length between 3 and 4 cross. Flickwg, what numbers do you have for the hub measurements and rim ERD? Just for fun.

  • I am in the process of putting together a triplet patterned rear wheel myself. I have a 32 hole hub, which I will lace 8 spokes 1x NDS and 16 spokes 3x DS, to a standard 24 holed rim. My NDS, like yours, was not a problem.

    But to calculate my DS I had to put my rim and hub measurements into spokecalc, then set it to 48 spoke 5x.

    This gave me 275.5, but an addition adjustment (dont know?) gives the correct 273.8

    The triplet lacing formula used was originally concieved by a guy called Jeremy from Alchemy Bicycle works. Might be worth sending him an E-mail, their component prices are certainly good (US though).

    Most of my knowledge on triplet lacing is stolen from this thread.

    Yeah lets have a play with the numbers ;=)

  • hi

    did someone already built up the following combo? :

    planet X hubs with open pros ?

    what is the Ø of the holes in the planet X hubs ? 2,6mm like on the cheap novatecs ?

    does somebody have the matching spoke length for 32 spokes , standart 3x crossed ?

  • nobody?

  • ~292mm with 12mm nipple. very very standard.
