I'm going to regret buying an MTB aren't I?
Mind you, I change the fork oil in my Kona the other week with socket and a syringe so what is all the other shit for? Full field rebuilds of suspension? Fuck that.

Yeah, pay someone to do that bit.

Yeah, if I bust my suss so bad on a trip somewhere I'm either racing in which case I'll bodge it or quit or if it's a tour thing I'll buy a new fork or take one off a hire bike until the other one can be fixed. Lugging £1000 worth of tools around MTB parks >>>

This is my thinking, and why I get my suspension serviced every year in the hope and expectation that it won't blow up. I do, with that said, have a spare rear shock - maybe that should make it into the spare parts box next time I travel.
I have been wondering about trying the Cane Creek Helm v2 Coil, which has the advantage that whilst you can blow the damper up you have to be seriously unlucky to FUBAR the actual coil, so you can always finish the ride (albeit bouncily) whereas an air-spring failure is going to be more of a pain.

Oh, Neil, it's you. Carry on...
-
• #360
That's not a bad idea. You're obviously far more likely to explode your suspension doing Enduro stuff compared to my
gravelxc stuff. -
• #361
Nah, Dammit has no trouble retaining air.. in his brakes.
-
• #362
Buys coil sprung fork - rear shock inexplicably stops holding air
-
• #363
Carrying a spare shock is probably excessive after I've just got through your tool list and you don't seem to have any chain related tools? No chain splitter and no quick link pliers?
-
• #364
I carry a chain splitter and chain links on me whenever I'm riding. The workshop tool level chain splitter and so forth is in the main toolbox.

^That's always in my pocket, and I have the Silca toolkit that includes a torque wrench in my pack, along with a long T25. I also have a Muc-Off tool-bottle that has a range of spares in it, including chain link pliers, spare chain links, one of those orange inner tubes and (yet another) multi-tool set with a chain tool.

I will never question you again, It seems you are far more prepared than anyone ever.

"It's not about the tool, but how you use it"

I don't even carry a pump now. I just ride bikes that I can abandon when I flat.
waves goodbye to Kona

I have Rimpact inserts, no air required (but it is better to have some).

Trust me, if and when you get the opportunity to try ride away with a flat on Rimpact insert you're going to be bitterly disappointed.
I flated and managed to ride about 10 meters before the tyre bead popped of the rim and I had to carry my bike on my back all the way to car while wearing full dh gear.
-
• #373
I rode mine quite a way (10km or so) on fire roads back to the car, were you still on proper off-road?
-
• #374
Ah fair enough!
This was at inners while on the trail. Figured the rim was being warrantied so might as well.
Tyre popped off and wheel couldn't spin freely. Bikes get heavy very quickly :( -
• #375
Tyre inserts cost more than the bike I'm currently riding.
Suspension mostly, it would seem
