- jokes about child abuse/rape/sexual violence are absolutely, **unquestionably **wrong and its lamentable that anyone would think otherwise. imagine if you, your brother/sister, girlfriend/boyfriend or your own child had been abused or raped by someone, i doubt you'd be making jokes about it. it will never ever be funny. the effects dont just go away after a few days, they stay with you forever and im amazed and saddened that there are so many people that think jokes about those subjects are fine to make. cheap shot jokes about the fact that he's died on the other hand, pfff, go ahead.
But what if you don't have to imagine and still question that? I think in trying to to be sensitive to victims of abuse you've slipped over the line in to thinking you can speak on the behalf of all of them. Well, in this case, I know for a fact that you can't.

Nonsense. It's being able to laugh and make jokes about terrible things that facilitates our getting over them. If you're not comfortable with that fine, but don't presume to speak for others who are.

fair enough.

and indeed fair enough.
however, i did point out at the top of my post that it was just my opinion.im not comfortable with it, clearly, but im not presuming to speak for others. just me, though i know a lot of people would agree with what i said, and it seems that others dont. which is also fine.
its weird because im torn by jokes about death and tragedies. by that i mean i think that they are inappropriate, but i dont feel it but because they are so far removed from me, they mean nothing and can be funny in some abstract way.
but the paedo jokes i can never find funny because they arent far from me, so i do think and feel strongly about them, and im just expressing that feeling. .
i also think that abuse jokes are far less abstract and closer to more people in general than plane crash/environmental catastrophie/death jokes. for example, in a room of ten people, you could probably all laugh at a joke about death and plane crashes, but a paedo joke will leave at least one, more like two or three feeling uncomfortable.
*to me, *it is unquestionable, maybe that will change in time but right now it is my opinion. im not telling people to stop it, but if i find what people write to be offensive, i am allowed to be offended and express that. im sorry if folks feel i was out of order and trying to speak for others, but it simply isnt what i was doing.
anyway, carry on, im outta here.
R.I.P MJ.

'The way you make me feel' from Bad is my favourite.
thats a cool song.
Making a joke about something is not the same as condoning it.
I can think of plenty of jokes that involve death, eg the "aeroplane going down / limited number of parachutes" genre.
1) They're not considered particularly risque, because jokes about death are common.
2) Finding one of those jokes funny /= finding the recent Air France crash funny. It goes without saying that you'd expect the effects of that to stay with the families of the deceased for a long time, too.
I'm not saying that you should find the paedo jokes on this thread funny, though. Most of them have been shit.
