  • no virus! i forgot about that. that is amazing.

No Virus thing is a bit of a joke tbh.

Apple take ages to fix (some critical) security holes, e.g they still haven't updated the Java distribution which has some critical security flaws. The firewall is setup to allow all incoming connections as default which is just crazy.

  • Bump.

Looking for a small and cheap laptop for note taking and internet browsing. Full sized keyboard and light weight is may main concern. Was thinking about the EeePC 1000HE. Light, more-or-less full sized keyboard (I read something that compared it to the keyboards on Mac Books?).

This sound smart? Any other ideas?

  • bump! Come on nerds, some advice! I like the idea of laptops that take sim cards for interwebz, as well.

    USB dongle

  • nah fuck the dongles, get a dell 6400 or sommit and an o2 pay as you go 3g sim (there free, no contract) £15 a month for 3gigaberts

  • I already has internets on my phone's sim, so something I could just pop that into... Or I suppose I could use it as a dongle...

friend of mine got an eeepc about 8 months ago. keyboard was 96% of full size, so hardly noticeable difference. it was about 200 quid from what i remember. he's got ubuntu on it, so free software, and he loves it - totally portable (he carries it everywhere) and does everything he wants (internet, note taking, document editing, etc).

my parents just got an eeepc as well - again, not sure about the model number, but so far they are liking it. only thing they don't like is they can't figure out how to register the windows office software: it keeps asking them to buy the whole office suite for ever (100 quid) before it will let them continue, and they don't want to spend any more money as this was meant to be a cheap laptop they can carry around with them. they've agreed for me to install ubuntu on it for them, so i'm going to do that this weekend.

i may consider getting one of these for me, too - although my newest computer is the g2 hero (android phone) which allows me to run linux and to have a portable wireless internet enabled computer in my back pocket. only gripe is that the keyboard is a bit small (i can't do touch-typing of the standard variety!)

    hope this helps,

  • ps, the ubuntu enabled eepc that my friend has works fine with a 3g dongle, so i'm sure it would work fine with a phone, too.

  • ^^ eepc sounds right up your street

We use the Dongles at work (well, I don't the sales peeps do) It must widen your choice of machine though, only requiring usb?

  • I use the Dongle at home and its shite..i win

  • You are a dongle.

  • stroke my dongle

  • You are a dongle.

  • Really tempted to get a g2 hero... Hmmm... ponders

  • dongleist massive...blow your horns!

    fecking pommy bastard.

  • the dell outlets pretty good for getting cheap laptops. had mine for a few years now and no real problems.

mac's are great if you sleep on a pile of cash. they're very shiny.

oh, if you want a decent operating system i can't recommend ubuntu enough. its geared for novices in unix and most of the drivers work straight away. you never need to buy software and can run windows programs on it too with a little bit of trickery. xp sucks.
