  • Eh.

I need a new laptop, on a low budget, barely download stuff, and dislike macs. Hmm. Any ideas geeks?

    • the 10" have no DVD/CDr drive, 15" do
  • We are a Dell estate at work - our Dell account manager reccomends Acer (off the record) - they are now what Dell used to be. Technically, reliably, cost effective etc.

Yeah I found a sweet deal for £349 on the dell site for the 15" one (edit: the one you linked)

See. This is where my problem strikes, every one recommends one and hates the other. So I'm like wtf, WHICH ONE?
    I'm currently using a Samsung R60+

  • Acer have overtaken Dell in sales recently. They are very very good for the money.

  • Would this one be a good deal then?

    Not bad

an extra Gb of memory and bigger HDD for an extra £70 here

    http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/604712/ACER-AS5532-314G50MN?cm_sp=FeatureEnd-_-Laptops-_-position-

I know two people who have bought this model - very pleased.

I think as well Acer give you a free BT Openzone WIFI account

EDIT: but yeah, the one from PC World is good too if you don't want to spend the extra

  • Have until the end of the month.
2GB is what I have and it's nowhere near full despite having this laptop since Feb '08

  • you have a 2Gb hard drive?

  • RAM: 2GB

On a samsung r60+ like I said earlier!

  • ok that's fine - so either 3Gb or 4Gb RAM will be an improvement

If you don't download lots of music and dont need the capacity I would say go with the first option then. 160Gb drive will be enough - you could always buy a 320Gb passport for like £50-60 quid if you start to need more space - the price of storage is dropping all the time, it's not an issue at all

  • HP - (2nd one on the list)... I really like this one, but noone's given me feedback on HP though, and that little netbook is not really out yet I think, though the reviews seem to be raving about it. My worry is, would a netbook be too sluggish for windows 7?
I am fully aware Windows 7 is a little slow with some bugs, but there's ongoing updates, and I really do love Vista. :P

I really like HP (i would as they are my client!!) but i would look more at the new Dell Mini 10. The build quality is about the same but you get a bigger battery and higher res screen (really important on the 10" models) for £10 less! If you click on this one: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=NRSM1001&l=en&m_30=322357&oc=N00s1002&rbc=N00s1002&s=dhs and add the Higher Res screen.

    10.1" HD TrueLife Widescreen Display (1366 x 768)?

Not bad price, I like it. Will it handle the Windows 7 well?

  • Depends what you want to do - why are you considering a netbook? If all you want to do is pull it out in a coffee shop/libary and surf, yeah go for it. Anything else, I would say but a 13" or 15" laptop

    That's the one.

Re: windows 7, they all come with the starter edition now which limits some of the processor hungry useless features (or shiny bits) which makes them quite usable. The new Atom processors also handle flash really well (although i would ditch IE as soon as you get it in favour of Chrome).

Only thing, as someone else said, is that they don't come with CD drives. My girlfriend has the old mini 10 and hasn't needed the CD drive she bought for it in 6 months.

There's no CDr/DVD drive on the Dell 10" that's a no unless I want to add an extra 60, pointless when I can go for a Dell 15" I watch DVD often and store images/upload from CD's often

Well, I travel from time to time, and its easier to carry a smaller laptop imo than a big one along with my stuff on the train/flight. But Im worried mainly how it will handle Win 7.

  • I really want the HP Mini 210 :/

Still no CD drive on those either i'm afraid.

It is nice to see that demand is there though. I'm working on the European marketing strategy for the HP Mini 210 at the moment :)

  • 1Gb DDR and 1.6 Ghz processor - sorry that is going to be slooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww

  • 1Gb DDR and 1.6 Ghz processor - sorry that is going to be slooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww

It depends. The new Atom N450s are quite quick for everyday tasks (web, office etc). The newer ones also have hardware acceleration which allows pretty fluid 1080p flash playback at 60fps!

  • Bah.

I'm no closer to choosing my soulmate then.

  • Go to Cex, preowned FTW.

mine have that widescreen, and to be honest it's a little tricky to see on a somewhat small screen (but then I have dodgy eyes), it's a little sluggish with XP, and the max RAM is 1GB, nice hard drive space at 160GB, web browsing with flash can be a little sluggish as well.

look like they don't have the Mini 10 anymore but the 11z which is defintely a lots better with a max RAM of 4GB, a very noticable difference, the £399 one with 2GB RAM, 250GB HD and Windows 7 is pretty nice.

Still better off getting either those DELL or Acer 15" laptop, more bang for your buck (especially as a main computer), I was very impressed with the Acer 5532 I got for my grandfather, it even play Bioshock reasonable well at medium setting much to my surprise.
