• not quite sure about riding without crank bolts, but if you did your cranks wouldn't come loose, they'd either come straight off or nothing at all would happen.

Anyway, here's the thing about annoying noises from your drivechain. Ride the bike and the clunk will either repeat with ONE pedal revolution or it wont. If it does, it's either loose BB, loose cranks, or pedal bearings (or possibly damaged chainring). If it does not (ie less frequent), its something based on the chain or wheel revolution.

  • Has loose BB problems with the conversion and now with the new track bike and the one-revolution thing doesn't hold - with cranks it's fairly regular but with the BB it's a function of how much strain it's under at any given moment, so can be more sporadic.

Crank bolt arguments are a bit C+. Grease, don't grease, whatever - just tighten them to fuck when you put them on and leave them well alone after.

  • I've started getting a weird click from my chainline recently.

Every second revolution of the cranks there is a small but definate click and a bit of tension in the movement.

I've checked the chainring bolts are tight and the chainline is straight

The BB is a pretty new Miche Primato. But I'm guessing it can't be that as there would be a click every revolution of the cranks.

My only guess would be that there is a stiff link in the chain. I'm running an even ratio (48-18).

Would this probably be the case or something worse?

    Cheers!

  • check the pedals too.

  • yeah and v good chance you got a stiff link in the chain. easy to sort. good advice from shins too. MOH

  • I had this last week while working on a conversion, it was just a stiff link but it went away after slackening the chain tension. Try turning the cranks really slowly and wait for the click, see which link is about to go round the sprocket/chainring and mark it. Spin a few more times and repeat. If its the same place then its a stiff link.

  • Check - Pedals!

    Thanks for the advice!

Will I have to remove the link completely if I find the stiff little bugger? ;)

  • You sure it's not your knees?

nope.. just get the chaintool out and have a play around with it... should be able to fix it :) clean and lube will also help

  • before you grab the chain tool and get stuck in an endless loop pushing the pin a bit too far each way never loosening the thing up. Just grab the chain either side of the stiff link and flex it back and forth a few times, dont be gentle. That will more than likely sort it out. Unless of course you can see that the pin is badly positioned.

    good point!

  • Sweet.
Gonna give it a go this afternoon, have my chain tool on hand just in case.

    Ta!

  • I just recently got myself a new Genesis Flyer, which I am running as a single speed, and I love it, but, I have an odd, rhythmic, knocking noise, coming from my bottom bracket ( i think ) it is only there when I put some power down, and some times for a little time just after I've been pedaling hard.
Its not the nice, quick, quiet noise of the bearings or the chain doing its thing, its louder than that and quite slow maybe 5 knocks, per revolution of the crank arm?
I took her back to Evans and asked them If they knew what the problem might be and they tightened up the crank arm a teeny bit, this has helped slightly, but not much.
Any body out there had similar problems or any suggestions as to what this might be?
Or is my O.C.D, getting the better of me again?

  • Check chainring bolts, crank bolts, pedals, inpsect chain. Also check seat post and seat

If all is good take cranks, chain ring and bottom bracket out clean regreace and reinstall. Do the same with seat and seat post and pedals.

  • Id give this a go first...

Take the crank arm off give the taper a clean and the contact point of the crank arm... muckoff or similar. and put back on and see.

and what tommy says about bolts etc.

  • check your pedals, I had a similar thing, though mine became an almighty squeaking, and wailing, which made me ashamed to ride becuase of the noise which emanated from my bike.
Check pedals and if possible try another set of pedals to see if the noises re-occur...

  • er.. should this all be necessary with a brand new bike? genuine question..

  • yeah... um a few people i know who have had bikes from there, have had problems with their builds... i like to see it as giving you an opportunity to tinker.

edit and is the noise sided...ie coming from a left or right down pedal?

  • i like to see it as giving you an opportunity to tinker.

true Shins - and an admirable approach to take. But not one everyone would take with, say, a washing machine. Sort it out Evans!

  • There is always a chance of an odd bit of grid or a bur in the metal resulting in the noise. It's no big deal and pretty unavoidable to have the odd bike have a noise

  • Oh I'm quite happy to tinker! Its hard to tell exactly were its coming from as it only happens when Im putting a lot of pressure on the pedals, so I cant re create it while the bikes off the ground in the shed when I'm tinkering, I'm pretty sure its coming from the bottom bracket or the chain ring rather than the pedals though, I just fitted some new pedals and it hasn't affected altered the noise at all.
thanks to 'the brick' and 'shin scar' I'l try taking a look at those.
@ pajamas, I'm not sure, it's so hard to 'prove' it even happens and its not that loud, there's no vibration seems a little pedantic to get too worked up about? or am i sitting on a time bomb here that can only get worse? eek!
p.s did I really write eek? oh yes I did, good god.

tell me about it... got an izumi chain...rrrrrrrrrrrrrttttrtrtrtrtrttrtrtrtrtrtrtr... on the GT annoys the piss out of me. I once had a cheap saddle which made the most annoying noise dropped a bit of lube on the rials and hey presto... silent as me sneaking into dales mums bedroom.

  • I guess you're right tommy/bbvd.. kind of lame if it's a niggle straight off though..

  • its more annoying because my last bike had a similar problem only much MUCH more pronounced ( shite bottom bracket bent crank arm, shite ancient knackered carrera mountain bike ) maybe its my legs?

  • If the bike was bought new, most places (should) offer the equivalent of a years free servicing or a number of free check ups.
Alot of the time most of the problems ever found in bikes are going to be within the first 6 weeks of general use as things start to bed in and loosen up.

So take it back to where you bought it from and let the mechanics there give it a once over and a test ride. Pretyty much everything on the bike can be replaced under warranty.

Seeing as most bikes are built to a price point, many of the sub components tend to be lower quality. Including hubs and bottom brackets. So just keep that in mind.
