  • Couldn't you just use the clip that comes with the lock?

Or does the fag not have one? I have NY 3000 and mini evo, both came with one.

  • Cheap beater + fah mini = an almost complete piece of mind.

    Nope.

really? what happens to legitimate locks such as the OnGuard Brute? i'm ready to be shown up here. I just don't believe it.

    Too fucking big to carry.

    @OP
I wouldn't put that lock on the bike unless you didn't have a bag that day, sprung vs unsprung weight will make the handling of your bike noticeably deader.
I have that same lock but wouldn't want it on any of my decent bikes if I could help it. Beater sure, why not?

Nice work with the rattle-proofing though.

  • not really regarding putting on your trouser on in the morning! but yes, having a holster is horses for courses.

I can understand the kidneys aspect thought, but I'm not really worried about it since I rarely ever have close call.

hold on. apart from the time you started *a thread *about it? :P

    OnGuard **Mini **brute. Sorry.

  • jersey, I have not so far seen the Onguard Brute Mini on sale here in the UK. I've had two bikes stolen in London, in a span of 17 years, but both bikes were treasured, so I believe in trying to secure a bike as best as possible.

I am with Scott_not_Scot's method of security - multiple hardcore locks. Or, not letting the f*cking thing out of my sight for more than a few seconds.

Many people are suckered into buying locks that are not as robust as they would really like, and then find out about it later. Your personal advice, that says heavier locks are a joke to you, only causes guffawing in the back rows.

  • Good effort Dylan and Scott.

  • Can anyone find a comparison of an OnGuard Brute Mini against a Fahg mini?

  • Dammit, I doubt such a comparison is available. But, having familaised myself with what each lock offers, I think this may be a reasonable guestimate:

***Interesting fact I just found out, is that the Onguard Brute Mini is a fully 18mm lock, ***
whereas the Onguard Brute STD (standard), and Onguard Brute LS (Long shackle) are both 16.8mm locks.

Therefore, the Onguard Brute Mini is a direct competitor to the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini. Both are short shackle locks of 18mm bar diameter.

The Fahg Mini is made of specially hardened steel, as is the Brute Mini, but I would wager that the Fahg Mini is the stronger. That said, the X4 technology of the Brutes, means that the bar is effectively locked at 4 points, meaning it would take 2 seperate cuts to open the lock. The 16mm Abus Granite Extreme 59, is square tapered, and locks at two points, again, forcing 2 cuts before it is properly opened.

I'd then say, that if the Brute Mini X4 can be found in the UK, then I'd recommend it. Though the Fahg Mini takes 3 minutes to cut, I should think that the Brute Mini X4 would take that time or more, especially considering that it requires 2 cuts.

However, the Fahg Mini has the best reputation amongst bike locks, and most bike thieves would rather not ruin their disks on their portable angle grinders, and try something that looks less formidable.

    Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini - 2.09kgs / 4.61lbs
    Onguard Brute Mini X4 - 2.05kgs / 4.52lbs

    Nothing in it really.

i've been waiting for Abus to manufacture a Mini D Lock of the same caliber as the Granite X-PLus or the Granit Extreme since i reckon they would be quite probably the safest locks in the world.

literally exactly what i was going to post. Both are 10 tonne 18mm locks, but the 4 point locking mech on the Brute is *supposedly *superior to both the Fah and the Fah Mini.

i had no idea they made a Fah Mini to begin with, however... I'll admit ignorance on that point. ANyway, that wasn't what this thread was started about. I stand by the assertion that the full sized Fah is dumb as nails especially when these minis exist. Minis are better anyway in general because you can't fit tools in there as easily.

and as a final statement. almost any lock is effective against a junky. and literally no lock is effective against a pro or your own stupidity. I'd still ride a piece of shittte I can basically lock up with a length of rope over all the pther hoopla discussed in this thread.

  • ...i for one don't want to ride a piece of shit bike for 80% of the time.

    hear hear!

The last thing I want to do is to be forced to ride a piece of shit just because the bike theft are more tooled up nowadays, fuck them! I'm going to ride it as much as I can.

  • As i said before though...the theory is nice...but the bike that people ride to work is the bike that they ride probably 80+% of the time....they usually ride to drinks on it too....so if they only keep their nice bike for the rest of the time, they barely get ridden....i for one don't want to ride a piece of shit bike for 80% of the time.

    amen to that.

  • Haha I got that. I deff ride my piece of shit more days. Daily in fact. But I like it. It rides like a dream. Doesn't scratch dent or get stolen. It has a huge rack/basket for grabbing groceries etc. My nice geared bike sees more miles though. Many more. But it's never seen a lock. To each their own and sorry to stir up so much shit. I'll watch it from now on.

  • one thing you kneed to know about London is that it doesn't matter if the lock has a 4 point locking mechanism or not....the pro's aren't going for the mechanisms anymore, they're using cordless angle grinders to cut through the horseshoe part...so it's the hardness of this part that determines how long it takes them.

I think you missed the point that GA2G was making. With the 4 point locking mechanism you have to cut **both **sides of the horseshoe part of the lock to open it, whereas with the Fag Mini once you've cut one side the horseshoe can rotate open. So it does make a difference.

  • onguard only provides 10 different key combos. so one would have a 10% chance of their onguard key working in someone else's onguard lock.

    no thank you.

  • Fair enough Scott, my bad! I have a Fag mini but not really using it yet as I've got secure parking at work so still using my Abus Steel-o-flex. Not that secure, but comfy to carry around.

  • onguard only provides 10 different key combos. so one would have a 10% chance of their onguard key working in someone else's onguard lock.

    no thank you.

If true (and I have no reason to disbelieve you) that is shocking security.

  • I can imagine the order:

    "Dear sir,

I would like ten Onguard Brute Mini's.

Please ensure that they all come with different key types so that I do not have any duplication.

    Yours sincerely,

    A. Tealeaf"

  • onguard only provides 10 different key combos. so one would have a 10% chance of their onguard key working in someone else's onguard lock.

    no thank you.

    What?!

  • It's somewhat of a security Epic Fail if true, you have anything to contribute on this Jersey?

  • nothing. Just found annother anecdotal reference to it on velospace. I'm going to email onguard later in the day. If it turns out to be true I'm getting a fah mini, because this surely represents the start of a leak of this insanity to the public. Unbelievable.

  • Security through obscurity is an Epic Fail waiting to happen.

Vide any cryptosystem that has relied on it.

Could you let us know the results of your research?

  • ok. so i called them. the guy answering the phone got nervous. I was on hold and started to feel like i had them by the balls. then the lock division got on the phone and started laughing at me. their words were "we have tens of thousands" of keys. Not ten. They did however, say that their bike racks--the Topeak ones that lock--don't have many keys. Those are just meant as a deterrent whne you're filling the tank or something. Not meant for security. They also said that is explained in the packaging that the racks come with.

    case closed.

  • Then they promptly asked if I had any ideas for carrying their OnGuard Brute because the plastic brackets keep breaking and some other riders reporting kidney injury related to blunt trauma.

I said "NO!" and hung up

    ;-)
