I think SP was referencing the seemingly widespread british/american generalisations about France/French people.
All generalisations are silly. Without the French we never would have gained independence from the Brits. And they did give us a lovely statue.

Personally I hate it. I've heard too many people say really stupid things about a country they know nothing about. Having been to France a few times in my short life I can say that French people seem much more helpful and welcoming to strangers than most English people.
