  • This must have been done before, but couldn't find anything in Search...

Anyone have experience comparing this rims? I'm looking to build a new rear wheel and like the idea of the CXP33's strength (and looks) but want to maximise acceleration and "nippiness" for hill climbs. Will the CXP33 feel noticeably more sluggish? Cheers...

  • I doubt it. According to Weight Weenies, Open Pros are 20g lighter each than CXP33s, I'd be very surprised if anyone was able to notice that difference.

  • CXP33 should be fine.

  • I run CXP 33s on my trick bike. They are hella strong, and as you said, not too heavy.
    Good choice.

  • CXP 33s all the way. I've tried both and they're my favourite, they feel bombproof and fast.

  • cxp 33's

i've just bought a set on nice goldtec hubs

  • Open pro's imo. But that's just coz i have them. Not a whole lot of difference between the 2. CXP33 may be a tiny bit stronger, but with a good wheel build using pro's, you will have no problems.

  • well built open pro with a goldtec hub makes for a strong wheel.

buy the bits direct from goldtec and then get someone to make the wheel (they will discount if they dont make the wheel)

  • Depends what your after.
The cxp33s would'nt make a much stronger wheel (IMHO), but it would probably be stiffer.

    So cxp33 for acceleration/ aero.
Open pro for climbing/ comfort on bad road surfaces.

I've got a pair of cxp33s laced 32 spoke 3x (slightly overbuilt?). They are seriously stiff and quite light. I find them very responsive if not the most comfortable wheelset I've owned.

  • Actually, I prefer a wheel that absorbs road buzz, so if the Open Pro is significantly better for this that would steer me in that direction?

The OpenPro is a very popular rim in the paris roubaix, if that answers your question :)

Plus, strength-wise the eyelets, and the slight bit of give a box section rim has, makes for a nice strong wheel.

  • Not much in it, really. The open pros will likely give a smoother ride, cxp33s are renowned for being bombproof. The weight is neither here nor there really. How heavy are you, incidentally? If you're a big guy, the cxp33s will likely be the better bet. I've ridden cxp2-something in the past and they never needed truing but were a little harsh.

Alternatives: Ambrosio Excellight - like open pros, but tends to be wheelbuilders (I'm reliably informed by the guy who built my last wheels!) rim of choice because they're both strong and well made (even, true, neat welds), and build up with very even tension (which is what you want in a wheel); IRD cadence aero or road - same kind of section as a cxp33, but lighter, maybe not as robust but you get the light and aero combo.

    Courant

  • like my CXP33, only problem is on strong cross winds when they can act a bit like sails but that goes for any aero rims...

  • I've used both there's nothing between them.
    Both fantastic rims.

  • +1 to Excellights. I'm loving mine.

  • I have both, I'd go for open pro, any wheel can be strong enough as long it's build properly.

Open pro is slighty lighter and slighty easier to keep the bike in a straight line when it's windy as fuck, just as strong too.

Courant is right, it's varies on the wheelbuilder, I've shitter wheels that stay true and reliable for years when build well, and wheelbuilding not even rocket science.

  • you could hardly say that cxp33 are bad in the wind, its a not worth mentioning really.
H+son on the other hand is an entierly different story...

  • open pros.

True. I've had CXP33s on my commuting bike for 4 years without any issue with crosswinds. Recently stuck a Shamal on the front, first windy day I was all over the shop.

  • either

  • can someone post a picture of their excellights? there's a total lack of images of these built up...

  • Anyone here used the Kinlin XR-200? Or IRD Niobium Road?

  • is that a genuine question or are you being a clever dick?

  • Not as clever as the dick who put him onto those rims in the first place. Good luck getting them Captain Lightweight :)

  • It's a genuine question. I never fuck about on forums.

@hippy - like I hadn't seen that WW list before...
