  • any interesting (and geeky) discussion gentlemen. i would want to run 28 -32c with the option of using 23c or 35c occasionally. i usually run tyres around 90 - 100psi.

this stuff about the A23 is quite interesting:

Velocity's A23 is the answer to the problem you did not know you had. The A23 is essentially a wider Aerohead rim. The idea behind a 23mm wide rim is that when paired with a 23c tire, the internal width of the rim clinches the tire beads just right so that the tire profile is very close to that of a tubular rim. So you get less rolling resistance, better cornering, and a better ride (you can run your tires at a lower pressure

  • Smallfurry: I've got a 40h A719 on the rear of my Jackson. IMO they're a great rim and well worth the price.

  • In principle this would be a good way of taking the unbalanced weight distribution on a bike, into account. But the rims dont really match.

My next roadie wheelset will be Kinlin XR270-front, and XR300-rear. The kinlin XR rims all look the same, the depth just varies. Kinlin rims are sold under various brand names such as IRD and Halo.

Also RE utility wheels, I'm edging towards Velocity Dyads. They is propa light.

Are you saying they don't match in an aesthetic way or in a performance sense?

Those Kinlin rims look good actually. Do you know if they are pinned or welded?

I may copy your build and do the XR240 front with a 300 rear.

    I get a similar effect running a 20mm veloflex on a 19.4mm cxp33. Buttery smooth rolling.

Cheers. Just been reminded by lots of sites that mavics cant be exported. So I need to find a more local source, which might be pricey.

I was thinking more about aesthetics to be honest. Things like the open pro being eyeleted might make it look like a mistake IMHO.

The kinlin rims are pinned. Apparantly the braking surface is a bit narrow too(probably to save weight). But all in all they good very good reviews for the price/weight.

  • Cool, I'm not overly fussed about looks at the minute. Just want to get rolling nicely on my small budget. I'm now considering a wider rim thanks to this talk too... since I run 28 - 32's anyway. Damn this forum makes it easy to spend time/money on bikes.

The kinlins are for the skinny tyre weight weenie crowd (ie. me). If I was running 32, I 'd agree with you and find something wider.

Get some velocity Dyads, if you can source the buggers, send me a couple too ;) (think I'm settling on these for the commuter)

  • Hi, I've read the first thirty replys on this thread and it seems like you guys know what you're on about.

I need to know if CPX33s are stronger than Open pro's for a heavier rider?

I've got wheels built with Open pro's and I keep getting spoke snappages, I've had them rebuilt about four times now and the last rebuild was with tandem spokes but still got a snapped spoke after only one twenty mile ride.

Is this because the wheel builder isn't good or is it the lack of strength in the rims?

I'm twenty stone btw, and that's a muscly twenty stone btw.

  • Cxp33 are stiffer due to their shape. They are also a little narrower than an Open Pro.

Spokes can break if they're over-tensioned which can be the result of a crap build with uneven tension. There is a wheelbuilding thread here which forum wheel guru Arup sometimes reads.

I would hazard a guess that 36h, and a 24mm wide touring rim like a Rigida Sputnik or Mavic A319/A719 might help?

  • I'm twenty stone

    Well, there's your trouble.

Chalo is your friend, what he doesn't know about big blokes' bikes isn't worth knowing.

I reckon you should be OK with 36h Rigida Sputnik rims built with DT Alpine III spokes for normal road use, but they are also available in 40h and 48h if you want a bit of extra insurance on the back.

  • Thanks miro_o and mdcc_tester, I'll have a look for Rigida Sputniks and DT spokes, cool.
